Critics Have Seen Sonic The Hedgehog 3 And Jim Carrey's 'Epic Performance' May Have Stolen The Show From Keanu

As a long-time video game enthusiast who grew up with Sonic the Hedgehog, I must say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been an absolute delight for me. The movie perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the beloved franchise while also offering a fresh and entertaining take on it. Jim Carrey’s double act as Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather is nothing short of brilliant, showcasing his exceptional comedic and dramatic skills. Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Shadow may have divided opinions, but I found myself moved by the internal conflict he expressed in his performance.

For decades, video game enthusiasts found themselves in a barren period when it came to movie adaptations of their beloved characters. Studios were more than content to produce films based on popular gaming characters, yet most of them failed to impress. However, the situation has drastically improved, and one major factor behind this change is the successful Sonic the Hedgehog film series. The first two Sonic movies are widely regarded as two of the best video game adaptations ever made, and based on the enthusiastic reception to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it seems the entire trilogy could now hold that title.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a notable novelty is the character of Shadow, a fan-favorite from the series, whose voice belongs to the equally admired Keanu Reeves. Contrary to assumptions, it’s not Keanu Reeves who takes center stage in this new movie; instead, it seems to be Jim Carrey who steals the show by portraying two different characters. In our review of TopMob’s Sonic 3, our very own Mike Reyes notes…

Increasing the comic talent’s on-screen presence might appear initially as a typical strategy from the “more is better” playbook. However, it’s the unique traits of the two characters that make us eager to watch them together, providing Carrey with additional chances to showcase his comedic and dramatic abilities.

In his return from retirement, Jim Carrey assumes dual roles – the movie’s antagonist Dr. Robotnik and also his character’s grandfather with a link to Shadow’s history. This double act seems to offer Carrey twice the opportunity for energetic acting, but Variety describes it as an “extraordinary performance.

In a stunning portrayal, Jim Carrey delivers an outstanding acting job that surpasses all his previous performances in these films… This kind of split performance, which the movie humorously references, is commonplace (a nod to its self-awareness), but it fits Carrey exceptionally well, given that he is an actor who, in some manner, is constantly engaging in a dialogue with himself.

Given the widespread praise for Jim Carrey’s performance, it leaves one questioning the impact of Keanu Reeves’ debut as the character Shadow. Interestingly, opinions on Shadow are more divided compared to Robotnik, leading Total Film (via GamesRadar) to suggest that Carrey’s dual role ends up making Shadow seem less unique, particularly given the high expectations surrounding his character. In essence, this could be seen as a letdown for fans who were eagerly anticipating Shadow’s appearance.

Given that Shadow plays a prominent role in both the game and marketing campaigns, it seems unexpected or underwhelming when he takes a less significant position.

Nonetheless, Slashfilm praises Keanu Reeves and the film Shadow more highly. They appreciate Reeves’ portrayal of a complex character, finding it convincing even though the central relationship in the movie revolves around a human child and a sentient hedgehog.

As a devoted movie lover, I can wholeheartedly say that Keanu Reeves pours every ounce of himself into portraying the torment within Shadow’s soul, making those poignant recollections of the loss of his cherished friend Maria truly heart-wrenching and deeply emotional.

In summary, many critics are highly appreciative of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. The film allows the animated characters to shine brighter in the limelight, with less human interference (apart from Carrey’s exceptional performance). These characters prove more than competent in carrying the narrative, as stated by The Hollywood Handle.

The series ignites fully in all aspects to exceed expectations by creating a passionate work that surpasses its earlier versions with an engaging plot, dynamic action sequences, and powerful performances throughout, preserving both emotional depth and entertaining elements as it embarks on a more mature journey.

Of course, critics are not a monolith and there are some who think Sonic 3 is a step-down, not up, for the franchise. Deadline thinks Sonic 2, was a superior film, but admits the audience loved it…

Regrettably, the enchantment found in Sonic 2 seems somewhat diminished compared to the original, offering a subtler, more immersive experience. Yet, during the press screening, it was met with enthusiasm, suggesting that its flamboyant aspects may have resonated with viewers.

Indeed, the movie does feature a couple of scenes that play after the credits roll, hinting that “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” might not be the last installment in the franchise. As for now, you can stream the first two movies (alongside the “Knuckles” series) by subscribing to Paramount+.
