In the year 2022, it was unveiled on Fox’s show “The Masked Singer” that Jack in the Box was none other than Rudy Giuliani, a public figure who was previously recognized for his role in rallying New York City following the 9/11 attacks. However, more recently, he has faced a series of embarrassments due to his involvement in attempts to alter the outcomes of the 2020 presidential election.
In the past, I discussed the tendency of reality TV to clean up images, focusing on cases involving disgraced or semi-disgraced conservative politicians. Examples include Omarosa Manigault Newman (on Celebrity Big Brother), Anthony Scaramucci (Dancing With the Stars), Sean Spicer (The Masked Singer) and Sarah Palin. These individuals were given a platform to rehabilitate their public images, despite their past controversies.
Unscripted shows, such as reality TV, aren’t just known for laundering images; instead, their allure lies in transforming ordinary individuals into brief celebrities, a tradition that dates back to shows like Candid Camera or The Gong Show. However, these programs can be considered part of an established subgenre built upon the idea that unscripted content can expose truth beyond what’s initially presented: “What you believed you witnessed and comprehended wasn’t authentic. THIS is real. You can verify it because ‘reality’ is included in the program listing.
The most significant indicator of the prevalent programming trend during the ’00s was undeniably Ozzy Osbourne, who tragically passed away on July 22, at the age of 76.
Before the debut of MTV’s “The Osbournes” on March 5, 2002, it was more probable that Ozzy Osbourne would peck a hole in a canary instead.
If you were growing up in the ’70s or ’80s, Osbourne was a legendary figure whose mysterious image seemed more like mythology. Known as the Prince of Darkness and the frontman for Black Sabbath, he radiated fierce intensity with an eerie occult undertone. The music often took a backseat to captivating tales that weren’t directly related to it.
(Note: “apocryphal stories” can be replaced with “captivating tales” or “fascinating rumors”)
Black Sabbath’s music was so grim and profane that it allegedly incited violent behavior such as murder and self-harm. Even without knowing any of their songs, one could associate the band with Ozzy Osbourne’s notorious exploits fueled by drugs and alcohol, which encompassed physical fights, multiple arrests, and a peculiar habit of biting off the heads of birds like doves and bats.
Ozzy Osboure was quite notorious, deliberately fostering this image – assuming, of course, that his public persona at the time was intentional. Above all, he appeared to be uncontrollable, a theme echoed in numerous Black Sabbath tracks.
The show titled “The Osbournes” cleverly transformed Ozzy Osbourne’s iconic persona, beloved by fans from various generations, into an unexpected portrayal, using his hit solo song “Crazy Train” in a jazzy reinterpretation as its theme.
Imagine a scenario where the show proposed that one of the most ferocious rockers, known for his ties to Aleister Crowley and Satanic themes, was actually a conventional family man – a 50-something, somewhat inarticulate father. His past is filled with epic tales, but his present life revolves around a caring yet controlling wife (Sharon) and two children (Kelly and Jack, as daughter Aimee declined to participate). They show little interest in obeying their distracted father just because of his former global notoriety.
In a more relaxed and conversational style:
On The Osbournes, Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t completely tamed, but he was almost a caricature of the man who was once barred from the Alamo for urinating. He was always cursing and high most of the time, yet much of the show, at first, was based on the idea that anything involving a family becomes funnier when it’s led by the Dark Prince. It was like The Addams Family made real.
Or:
Ozzy Osbourne, on his reality show The Osbournes, wasn’t fully domesticated but more like a satire of his former self, who was once kicked out of the Alamo for urinating. He frequently swore and seemed stoned, yet the humor in the show came from the fact that it was an ordinary family with Ozzy as the head – the Prince of Darkness himself. It was similar to The Addams Family but made real-life.
It’s amusing that your dad can’t work out the new TV remote, especially if you know him as a rock star like Ozzy Osbourne – it becomes hilarious! The same goes for your dog needing therapy; it’s funny in its own right, but when it comes to Ozzy Osbourne’s pet, it escalates to pure hilarity! A father-son fishing trip gone awry is amusing, but if the father is a legendary rocker like Ozzy and his biggest catch is a bird, that’s just priceless humor!
As a die-hard Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne fan, I might have initially seen his family reality show, The Osbournes, as a betrayal, turning the raw chaos of heavy metal into a more polished spectacle. However, in acknowledging that Ozzy’s terrifying persona was indeed an act, the show seemed to be saying, “This is the real us” – even though what we saw on TV still felt staged and artificial.
In The Osbournes reality show, the older Ozzy Osbourne portrayed just as much of a character as his earlier self. Despite some elements that might have been exaggerated or scripted, the show managed to create a sense of authenticity within its genre. It’s possible that some scenes and interactions between Ozzy and his family were staged, but if Sharon’s cancer and Ozzy’s ATV accident were genuine, then it suggests that the show was grounded in reality.
In this version, I have tried to use simpler language and avoid jargon like “synthetic credibility” which might be less familiar to some readers. Additionally, I have removed the emphasis tags from the original text as they are not necessary for clarity in this context.
The Osbournes marked the fourth or fifth phase of Ozzy Osbourne’s career and life, transforming his image from a heavy metal rebel to a lovable, family-friendly figure, much like how certain musical genres can become more refined over time. They became regular faces on reality TV, with Ozzy even performing a duet with Muppet character Miss Piggy.
The groundbreaking show “The Osbournes” paved the way for reality TV‘s focus on celebrity normalization and rehabilitation. Without it, we might not have seen Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey portraying their stereotypical characters in “Newlyweds“, or the term “surreal” associated with the relationship between Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen. If “The Osbournes” had never existed, we might question who Timothée Chalamet would be dating, whether David Schwimmer’s repetition of “Juice” in “American Crime Story” would still be amusing, or why anyone would have considered voting for Caitlyn Jenner as governor of California. Rudy Giuliani may never have become a household name like the Jack in the Box character.
It’s plausible to think that, had it not been for Ozzy Osbourne and his MTV-backed transformation, Donald Trump might not have had the chance to portray himself as a contemporary, successful entrepreneur on The Apprentice.
In simpler terms, during the years 2003 (Donald Trump) and 2000 (Ozzy Osbourne), it’s possible to argue that Trump was more prominent due to his various appearances on TV shows like Howard Stern’s and his pitchman roles. However, both individuals were equally distant from holding the presidency at the time. If the reality TV show “The Osbournes” helped redefine Ozzy Osbourne’s image, erasing the negative perception of his past misadventures, then “The Apprentice” served a similar purpose for Donald Trump, making him seem more authoritative and influential than he was in reality, thanks to the editing by Mark Burnett.
There may be some big ripples there.
The Osbournes reshaped public perception of Ozzy Osbourne, revolutionized reality television, and it seems they continue to influence our understanding of reality today.
