Oh, darling, gather ’round! It seems our dear crypto investor has taken a rather unfortunate tumble down the rabbit hole of digital deception, losing a staggering $7 million to a cold wallet that was anything but chilly! This little gem was purchased on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, where one might expect to find dance challenges, not financial ruin. 💃🕺

According to the ever-so-reliable blockchain security firm, SlowMist, this wallet was rigged tighter than a corset at a Victorian ball. They warned that those enticing “factory sealed” or “discounted” cold wallets sold on Douyin Shop are often just traps for the unwary. A low price? Oh, sweetie, that’s just bait for the unsuspecting fish! 🎣
Enter Hella, a user with connections to the illustrious Bitmain co-founder Jihan Wu, who revealed that the unfortunate victim was a close friend. In a panic, this friend described the wallet as a “carefully designed hot trap.” One can only imagine the drama! 🎭
Hella went on to explain that the stolen crypto was laundered through Huiwang, a Cambodian network with ties to all sorts of delightful shenanigans, including Huione Pay and the ever-so-charming darknet market, Haowang Guarantee. “When purchasing a cold wallet, darling, do choose a reliable channel. Most of what’s online is as genuine as a three-dollar bill,” she advised sagely. SlowMist, bless their hearts, tracked the funds but suggested recovery is about as likely as finding a needle in a haystack. 🧵
The firm’s security chief, 23pds, took to X to deliver a rather dramatic warning: “Don’t gamble your entire fortune on a ‘wallet’ that’s a few hundred bucks cheaper — that’s not saving money, it’s throwing your life away!” Oh, the wisdom! 💔
Alas, scams like this are as hard to stop as a runaway train, with third-party shippers blissfully unaware of the fraud they’re delivering. This particular scam is reminiscent of other recent escapades. Just last month, a Chinese printer company was accused of hiding crypto-stealing malware in its software. How quaint! 🖨️
And in April, Kaspersky uncovered thousands of fake Android phones, each one a little treasure trove of malware designed to pilfer crypto and personal information. Experts, bless their hearts, have been shouting from the rooftops that crypto users should always buy from trusted sellers and check their devices, lest they fall prey to these clever little rascals! 🕵️♂️
