As a gaming enthusiast with a heart for cinema, I can’t help but get excited about the potential of a live-action Cyberpunk movie, especially if Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves are involved. I remember playing Cyberpunk 2077 and being captivated by their characters – Solomon Reed and Johnny Silverhand respectively. The idea of seeing these iconic figures brought to life on the silver screen is nothing short of thrilling!
Currently, Idris Elba is advertising “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, yet he’s also set to produce a fresh movie inspired by another video game in the future.
Although a film adaptation of “Cyberpunk 2077” hasn’t been confirmed yet, Idris Elba expresses his interest in playing a role. Ideally, they could include the original character, Johnny Silverhand, if the project materializes.
Elba Wants a Cyberpunk Movie to Happen
The interviewer asked Idris Elba about possibly working together with Keanu Reeves on a future Cyberpunk movie, where Elba might reprise his character Solomon Reed from the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Wow, what an intriguing question! If any movie were to be adapted into live-action, it could potentially be ‘Cyberpunk 2077’. The fusion of our characters would undeniably create a remarkable spectacle, so let’s imagine that scenario becoming reality.
At present, there’s no news regarding a live-action Cyberpunk film, however, it’s been mentioned that another animated project is set to premiere on Netflix. As of yet, no specifics about the plot have been disclosed, but it’s expected that this new animation will be an original tale derived from the popular video game and anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Cyberpunk for quite some time now, given its long development process. However, it turns out that adaptations based in Night City have truly paid off, and none more so than Studio Trigger’s Edgerunners—a standout example of this success.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but credit the comeback of Cyberpunk as a game to the captivating success of Edgerunners as an anime. Fans like me, who were previously unaware of the game, have found ourselves eagerly searching for it after being drawn into the gripping tale of David Martinez and his tragic romance with netrunner Lucy.
If a live-action Cyberpunk were to occur, one might wonder about the potential roles for Elba and Reeves. Given different timelines, it’s an intriguing question. Among these characters, Solomon played by Elba could be more feasible to reintroduce in live-action, but there would likely require substantial CGI work due to Johnny Silverhand, as Reeves is much older, and Silverhand meets his end at a relatively young age.
The Video Game Movie Curse is Broken?
Despite being a longstanding stereotype, the curse associated with video game adaptations has been shattered by triumphs such as “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”, “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, “Fallout”, and “The Last of Us”.
If a Cyberpunk movie ever comes to fruition, it might just be the story that keeps it from becoming reality. You see, visually similar worlds have been successfully created before, such as in Blade Runner 2049 and even the less successful adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Even Netflix’s Altered Carbon series has managed to capture the neon Cyberpunk aesthetic for their show.
Of course, not every adaptation is a hit. Every once in a while, studios develop duds like the Borderlands movie. Like many other great adaptations, let’s just hope CDPR manages to escape the video game curse again.
Despite no official announcement of a Cyberpunk movie, fans can currently enjoy Idris Elba in the film titled “Phantom Liberty,” which is now accessible on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 platforms.
