If you’re interested in watching “Wicked”, keep an eye out for it at the Oscars in 2025. This NBCUniversal hit, which was both critically acclaimed and a box office success, received 10 nominations, tying with “The Brutalist” for the second most nominations that year.
In the musical adaptation of Oz, both Cynthia Erivo (as Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (as Glinda/Galinda) received acting recognition. Specifically, Erivo was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Grande was recognized in the Supporting Actress category. Moreover, the film made it onto the list of top 10 nominees for Best Picture. Given its acclaim, it’s no surprise that the film garnered multiple nods in craft categories such as Production Design, Sound, Visual Effects, Costume Design, Editing, and Hair & Makeup Styling.
Just like the Golden Globes, although the movie “Wicked” garnered a solid performance overall, its director John M. Chu and the film’s writers were unfortunately not nominated in the directing and writing categories. Due to using only songs from the original musical, “Wicked,” whose soundtrack peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 last year, was ineligible for the original song category. However, it did receive a nomination for best original score. Chu has revealed that part two will include two new songs, one of which is co-written by actress Erivo.
The movie “Wicked” delves into an unheard tale about the witches from Oz. This film, along with its upcoming sequel “Wicked: Part Two”, scheduled for release in November 2025, is inspired by the 2003 musical of the same name, which itself was based on Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel. Winnie Holzman, who wrote the script for the stage version, collaborated with Chu and Dana Fox to pen the screenplay for this film. Stephen Schwartz, an Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist, returned to the project to adapt the musical for the big screen. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who played Elphaba and Glinda respectively on Broadway, made appearances in the movie.
