Cynthia Erivo Speaks Out on Fan-Edited ‘Wicked’ Poster: “This Is Just Deeply Hurtful”

As a devoted fan of Cynthia Erivo and her extraordinary talent, I find it disheartening to witness such disrespectful actions towards one of my favorite artists. The fan-made movie poster for “Wicked” not only misses the mark but also crosses a line by obscuring Erivo’s eyes, essentially erasing her presence from the image.

Actress Cynthia Erivo, renowned for her role in “Wicked,” has expressed that a fan-created poster for the eagerly awaited movie musical from Universal Pictures is deeply painful.

The revised Universal poster conceals most of Cynthia Erivo’s eyes and face, mimicking the look of the initial Broadway poster in animation, where her eyes were covered by a broad-brimmed hat.

Eviro, playing Elphaba in Wicked, shared on her Instagram Story and elsewhere that the original post is an illustration. However, she herself is a real person, choosing to directly gaze into the camera lens, connecting with the viewer, as she believes that even without spoken words, our eyes can convey messages.

In the forthcoming film musical, the actress who won a Grammy and was nominated for an Oscar takes on the role of Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West), while Ariana Grande, who has also earned a Grammy and been nominated for a SAG Award, plays Glinda, the character who transforms into the Good Witch.

Our poster pays tribute, not copies, altering my appearance and concealing my eyes feels like eliminating me, which I find incredibly painful,” Erivo expressed on her social media platform. There was no question that Erivo felt deeply upset over the manipulated movie poster.

I’ve never encountered anything wilder or more inappropriate than this! It’s like we’re up against an insensitive AI, on par with someone asking ‘is your screen green?’ None of it is amusing, none of it is endearing. Instead, it demeans me, and I believe it demeans us all.” (as a gamer expressing frustration about an offensive game element)

She, along with Ariana Grande, are set to headline Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical “Wicked.” This production is scheduled to release in theaters on November 22. When contacted for a statement, Universal Pictures pointed to Cynthia Erivo’s Instagram Story post.
