Daisy Ridley Recalls Difficulty Filming ‘Chaos Walking’ with Tom Holland

As a dedicated follower of Daisy Ridley’s career, I can confidently say that she has proven her versatility and tenacity in the face of challenges. From the epic galaxy far, far away to the smaller, independent films that sparkle like hidden gems, Ridley continues to captivate audiences with her raw talent and undeniable passion for storytelling.

Although the Star Wars sequel trilogy didn’t reach its peak potential, the actors associated with it continued to thrive in their careers. Even amidst a divided audience response to The Last Jedi and the criticisms leveled at The Rise of Skywalker, performers like Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and John Boyega found themselves landing roles in intriguing future projects.

As the leading actress of the trilogy, Daisy Ridley, also took on starring roles and, at times, production duties for various films, big and small. Ridley revisited her original series by appearing in “Chaos Walking,” a film adaptation of the young adult novel with the same title, directed by Doug Liman. Sharing screen time with Tom Holland, Ridley encountered numerous hurdles during the making of the movie, which experienced multiple setbacks and eventually swapped out Liman for Fede Alvarez, director of “Alien: Romulus.” In an interview with Empire Magazine, Ridley openly discussed her struggles filming “Chaos Walking,” stating:

Making this movie wasn’t straightforward; Doug Liman works in an unconventional manner compared to most colleagues I’ve encountered. He’s quite improvisational. One particular scene stands out, as I recall the intense fear of portraying a character who couldn’t swim, and having to act in a swift-flowing river. Although I can swim myself, when you’re acting as someone who can’t, the panic becomes real. However, I adore that costume and wig, and we make the best use of such details.

Daisy Ridley Has Found Relevance Outside of ‘Star Wars’

Regardless of the challenges faced by ‘Chaos Walking’ and its less-than-favorable reviews, it is evident that Daisy Ridley has thrived in smaller, independent productions she is deeply invested in. Her frequent expressions of affection for movies like ‘The Young Woman and the Sea’, and ‘Sometimes I Think About Dying’ on social media attest to this. The latter film garnered significant acclaim during its Sundance debut in January 2023, and has maintained its popularity on the streaming platform MUBI.

Although not everyone might recognize Ridley from films outside of the Star Wars universe, her work in smaller projects serves as an introduction to independent cinema for those who aren’t familiar with it, opening up access to various genres and stories. The actor maintains a busy schedule, pairing up with Taz Skylar (known for Netflix’s One Piece) in the upcoming 2025 action thriller Cleaner. Despite some doubts about Star Wars’ future, it’s evident that Ridley is eager to remain involved in this franchise, provided her upcoming movie gets produced.

Regardless of changes in screenwriters, directors, and release schedules, it appears that Ridley Scott is poised to rejoin Star Wars with a standalone film focusing on Rey, which takes place at an undetermined point following The Rise of Skywalker. The actress recently offered a small update on the project, keeping fans hopeful amid Lucasfilm’s challenges in launching feature films. Rest assured, no matter what becomes of the character Rey Skywalker, Ridley will continue to appear in various projects, big and small, in the future.
