As a film critic with a penchant for uncovering the hidden depths of cinematic masterpieces, I must say that the neo-noir thriller Magpie has left quite an indelible impression on me. The collaboration between real-life couple Daisy Ridley and Tom Bateman in bringing this gripping tale to life is nothing short of extraordinary.
A fascinating beginning unfolds when a movie is born from the creative minds of a real-life duo. The movie “Magpie” lists Tom Bateman as its author, but it’s Daisy Ridley (known for her roles in “Star Wars” and “Young Woman and the Sea”) who contributed to the project’s inception right from the start, as we have found out more recently. In an interview with MovieWeb during the release of their intense neo-noir, Ridley shared insights into their collaborative effort in shaping the story on paper, including a shocking twist in the third act (without revealing any spoilers).
Being deeply immersed in the process, I was privy to witnessing the intricate pieces fall into place right before my eyes. I had no doubt that what Tom was crafting was exceptional, and I knew if we managed to assemble an outstanding team, we’d become genuinely invested in these characters, questioning their journey with bated breath: “What on earth is happening, and where is this going?” – This is how Ridley described the creation of her latest film.
A significant part of the impact in act three lies in the way the entire movie is filmed and the scenes are presented. This leaves you doubting the truthfulness and reliability of what you’re seeing, which is amplified by the manner in which it’s captured, especially during Anette’s distressing ordeal. Watching it was rewarding… It’s truly captivating to hear audience reactions to the final 20 minutes of the film.
Ridley discussed the reasons behind her successful collaboration with Bateman, who starred in Kenneth Branagh’s latest Agatha Christie films. “It might seem challenging in various ways, but I believe the key factor is our shared appreciation for cinema. We both know what we enjoy, and we relish exploring a wide variety of content. Our lengthy discussions about what we’re watching, even when we don’t always see eye-to-eye, are always engaging because, of course, each of us brings our unique viewpoints to the table.” She further explained:
Absolutely, our intention was to create a movie filled with amusement, and although the process was challenging at times, we aimed for an undercurrent of humor amidst the discomfort. Clear in our vision, this journey turned out to be incredibly rewarding.
Daisy Ridley Was Less Inhibited with Her Husband Not on Set
Fans of TV shows might also recall Ridley’s spouse Bateman from Peacock’s series “Based on a True Story“, particularly its second season. While both productions were underway, Bateman was occupied with the former, making it convenient for Ridley that he wasn’t present during the filming of her latest project, “Magpie“. Ridley shared with us that this separation actually aided the film, as she admitted feeling less inhibited without him on set. “It turned out to be a good thing,” she said, elaborating: “[It was good] because I think I would have felt a little restricted otherwise.
He intends to observe me in various activities, but due to the intimate nature of this specific role and the fact that everything is rather personal anyway, it turned out beneficial to have a physical gap between us. This was especially useful because he could review the daily footage and provide feedback as if he wasn’t present.
