Dana Carvey Reveals Smashing Ice Cream in Maya Rudolph’s Face on ‘SNL’ Was Unplanned

As a long-time SNL enthusiast who has witnessed countless legendary moments, I must say Dana Carvey never ceases to surprise and entertain us. His recent antics with the ice cream cone were a testament to his unparalleled improvisational skills. It’s clear that even after all these years, he still possesses that unique ability to bring laughter to millions.

Dana Carvey will never miss an opportunity to have a chaotic Saturday Night Live moment.

During a recent episode of the “Superfly” podcast, which he co-hosts with David Spade, the comedian shared that the incident involving him smashing an ice cream cone into Maya Rudolph’s face during last week’s opening sketch was entirely spontaneous.

Carvey mentioned that the ice cream cone wasn’t part of the original plan. He had asked the prop master for a small ice cream to use during the fashion show, but the prop master provided him with a larger one unexpectedly for the air show, without Carvey asking.

Toward the closing of the Oct. 5 episode’s initial skit, where Carvey’s portrayal of Joe Biden shared an ice cream with Rudolph’s Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff, Carvey playfully throws the ice cream at Rudolph, catching her off guard, attempting to suppress a chuckle.

Carvey recounted his spontaneous action, ‘I instinctively made a certain gesture,’ he said. ‘I had the ice cream in my hand, and I thought about Maya’s face. I didn’t want to harm her, but in a flash, an idea popped into my mind, and I executed it almost immediately. So, that settles all the speculation and discussions.’

During the podcast, Carvey expressed that he’s noticed a more “lighthearted and enjoyable” reaction to his Biden impression now that President Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race against Trump, compared to when he was campaigning for re-election, which he described as being like a “scorching oven.

To sum up, Carvey always aims to avoid appearing disrespectful towards Biden. Instead, he sees his impression as simply amplifying certain distinctive aspects of the president’s character.

The most important point is that it’s making me laugh, and I’m certainly doing things that he isn’t,” the comedian remarked. “He doesn’t hurl ice cream into faces or say ‘I can’t believe it’s not butter.’ Instead, I’m continuing with what I did to the first Bush.

During the years of 1986 to 1993, Carvey was a member on the Saturday Night Live (SNL) team and portrayed multiple politicians, among them President George H.W. Bush. Now, he’s returning to reprise his role as Biden for the NBC show during its 50th season.
