A significant discussion topic that’s creating buzz within the Hollywood community is set to take center stage at an exclusive event organized by Nicolas Berggruen’s Studio B, featuring two prominent thought leaders.
Daniel Kwan, co-director of the Oscar-winning film “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, will engage in a discussion with Jaron Lanier, a visionary in virtual reality, technology, writing, and music, on the topic: “Will human storytelling endure amidst algorithms?” This dialogue is scheduled to take place at an exclusive venue in West Hollywood, California, on July 25th.
This evening signifies the conclusion of the third installment of Vaster Than Empires (VTE), a speculative storytelling workshop organized by Berggruen’s Studio B and its Future Humans program. The workshop invites a group of 10 up-and-coming screenwriters, who were chosen through an open application process, to engage with professionals from the realms of science, technology, and philosophy as they ponder another profound question: What will the future hold for life? Last year’s event took place in Rome, Italy.
This interactive program offers tours of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Synthetic Biology Labs, and exclusive meetings with experts in biotech, consciousness, film technology, and AI. The aim is to inspire “daring, world-creating narratives that blend science and fiction, envisioning potential futures we might someday live in,” as explained by Studio B.
Berggruen explains the reasoning behind his team creating such a program and their involvement in this crucial stage: “Our aim with Studio B is to establish a connection between Hollywood’s creative mindset and the innovative thoughts of the Berggruen Institute. We think that storytelling plays a vital role in influencing how societies envision and construct the future,” Berggruen stated. (On Instagram, Berggruen also delves into complex topics such as evolution, humanity, ideas, climate change, and geopolitics in brief, understandable videos.)
Studio B, the internal media branch of the Berggruen Institute (an organization founded by a well-known philanthropist and investor often called “the homeless billionaire” or “philosopher king” by the New York Times), is headed by Alex Gardels and Nathalia Ramos An. Nick Goddard serves as producer and development head. This division has supported discussions on similar topics, as seen in their salon series where figures like Eric Schmidt, Ashton Kutcher, Reid Hoffman, J.J. Abrams, Yuval Noah Harari, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have discussed the societal impact of advanced technology. Studio B also collaborates with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to investigate technological, philosophical, and cultural changes in cinema and produces the Berggruen Institute’s podcast, Futurology.
