In Orlando, Universal’s latest theme park, Epic Universe, sprawls over 750 acres and comprises five captivating lands inspired by beloved fictional series. At Epic Universe, you’ll be immersed in the grand Celestial Park, where you can stay at the luxurious Universal Helios Grand Hotel, enjoy themed dining experiences, and bask in the enchantment of real-life cinematic wonder.
After that point, you can embark on a voyage to four imaginative destinations: the Isle of Berk from How to Train Your Dragon, which is set to come alive in breathtaking live action cinematography; 1900s Paris and the Ministry of Magic, traveling from the Mushroom Kingdom to Donkey Kong Country within Super Nintendo World; and to the mysterious Darkmoor Village in the Dark Universe. As you mingle with Universal’s timeless monsters, you will be captivated by an entirely new musical composition created by legendary musician, Danny Elfman.
Legendary Composer Danny Elfman Explains the Challenges of Composing Theme Park Music
Elfman is a versatile individual, known particularly for his eccentric choices. Originally recognized as the leader of the ’80s new wave band Oingo Boingo, he has since expanded his musical horizons. Over the years, he has contributed his skills to over a hundred movie soundtracks. Additionally, he has created music for stage performances, TV shows, and, not forgetting, Epic Universe’s Dark Universe.
In simpler terms, Elfman shared with NBC Insider that it was both an honor and enjoyable experience as he felt connected to the monsters in the movie since they were a significant part of his childhood identity. Guillermo del Toro, Tim Burton, and Elfman himself are all “monster kids,” a term used to describe people who grew up with monster movies. For Elfman, being involved in this project felt like coming full circle, as it brought him back to the monsters he admired from his childhood, providing a sense of fulfillment.
It’s quite possible that you’ve heard Danny Elfman’s music in some of the tales you love most. If a Tim Burton movie is on your screen, there’s a high likelihood that Elfman’s tunes are filling your ears, and this is just the beginning. His first film score was for the 1985 Tim Burton-directed film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” with Steve Bartek from Oingo Boingo contributing on guitar.

Danny Elfman is a highly accomplished composer, boasting an extensive portfolio that’s challenging to summarize succinctly. However, let’s touch upon some of his most notable works: the iconic theme for The Simpsons, the scores for films like Beetlejuice and Batman (1989), the music and lyrics for The Nightmare Before Christmas (with Jack Skellington’s singing voice included), Mars Attacks!, Men in Black, and Spider-Man, to name a few.
Certainly, composing music for a theme park involves a unique approach compared to scoring films. While both involve telling a story, capturing character essence, and setting atmosphere, you must also consider that guests are bombarded with stimuli from multiple directions in a theme park. Unlike movies where music can dominate the mood in a controlled theater setting, it’s just one instrument in a symphony of sights, sounds, and experiences at Epic Universe.
According to Elfman, people are immersing themselves in the atmosphere of the park, and that’s how it should be. As you stroll around, you sense it intuitively. Therefore, though unique, it continues to foster a connection.
In another point, Elfman highlighted a unique aspect: Typically, he attends the theater to appreciate his compositions visually and audibly. However, with Dark Universe, he ventures into the films themselves, feeling the music alongside legendary movie monsters – an opportunity also extended to you!
