Dany Trejo Revealed The Actor That Scares Him & You'll Never Guess Who It Is

As a gamer with a penchant for Hollywood lore and a soft spot for gritty narratives, I find the tale of Danny Trejo and John Cusack to be nothing short of intriguing. Trejo’s life journey is a testament to resilience and survival, having navigated the treacherous waters of street life and personal demons only to emerge as a respected figure in Hollywood. Yet, it’s the quiet, unassuming John Cusack who sends shivers down Trejo’s spine, not some hardened criminal or menacing villain from the movies they’ve worked together on.

Over the years, Dany Trejo has experienced both the best and the toughest times. From a turbulent childhood, battling alcohol and drug addiction in his teenage years, and spending time behind bars, he’s confronted genuine fear and formidable personalities but has miraculously survived to share his story. However, there’s one well-known Hollywood figure who instills the same dread in Trejo as life on the streets once did – John Cusack, famous for “Say Anything.” The duo collaborated on “Con Air,” and it seems that Cusack left a lasting impact on Trejo.

The story comes from an episode of How Did This Get Made, a podcast that explores Hollywood’s biggest flops. Co-host Paul Scheer recalled the story during Episode 305. “When we had Danny Trejo on the show here (Episode 38), he said the most dangerous person that he encountered on that ‘Con Air’ plane was John Cusack,'” Scheer recounted for his co-hosts. “He said, ‘That’s the person I’m most afraid of … because when you look in his eyes, he’s got something that’s crazy in there, and I don’t trust it.”

Although it may sound unbelievable, Trejo corroborated this account in a different interview, thereby suggesting that John Cusack could indeed be someone best avoided getting into a disagreement with.

Watch out for John Cusack

Danny Trejo has no problem stating that John Cusack is quite tough in real life, as he shared during an interview with Comicbook.com. In fact, Trejo revealed that Cusack is skilled in kickboxing, displaying speed, power, and precision. According to Trejo, “I can’t believe it, but the actor from ‘Con Air’… yes, John Cusack was trained by Benny ‘The Jet’ [Urquidez, a professional kickboxer and fight choreographer]. I watched John Cusack kick a bag, and he could easily break your ribs.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for John Cusack’s exceptional talents, as echoed by Danny Trejo in a heartfelt tribute. Besides extolling his acting prowess, Trejo also applauded Cusack for his kindness, a trait that resonated with the likes of Benny Urquidez as well. According to Trejo, Urquidez, his childhood friend and Mondo Urquidez’s brother, would often intervene to keep Cusack away from other actors on set because their displays of physical strength were turning into a friendly but competitive showcase that Trejo, known for his competitiveness, was eager to dominate. Growing up together with Mondo, the martial artist was well-aware of Cusack’s strong-willed nature. “I don’t always play well with others,” Trejo reminisced, “but he managed to keep me in check. He’s a tough cookie.” Despite the occasional rivalry, Trejo is not shy about acknowledging when he has been outmatched by Cusack’s talent.
