As a die-hard fan who has been following Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil journey since its inception back in 2014, I am beyond excited for “Daredevil: Born Again.” Not only is it a testament to the enduring power of fan support, but it also promises a delightful blend of old and new characters that will surely keep us on our toes.
Personally, I’m thrilled about the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” series within the MCU, not just because it gives Charlie Cox’s Daredevil a solo outing, but also because it brings back some of his original cast members. Moreover, as per Charlie Cox himself, there are some delightful cameos in store for us. After starring in three seasons of “Daredevil” and making a comeback as Matt Murdock in “The Defenders,” and then reappearing in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” fans like me have been eagerly waiting for Cox to headline his own Daredevil series within the MCU. The first trailer of “Daredevil: Born Again” unveiled at D23 introduced the iconic Marvel Comics characters, Muse and White Tiger. However, according to Charlie Cox, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for us fans.
At FanExpo Chicago (as reported by ScreenRant), Charlie Cox hinted at a new character he’s eager to see in Daredevil: Born Again. When asked if there was a specific comic book fans should read before watching Born Again next year, Cox tactfully avoided the question. He revealed that while working on the original Daredevil, he found one storyline particularly captivating and longed to witness its interaction with Daredevil on screen. Lastly, he tantalized fans by suggesting that other beloved characters would make an appearance in the series. Cox expressed this during his conversation:
“I recall receiving those scripts, and the specific character I’m pondering at this moment instantly comes to mind. When I previously read that tale before I embarked on Daredevil in 2014, I found it to be an exceptionally cool storyline and a fascinating dynamic between the characters. It was truly enjoyable, and I’m eagerly anticipating revisiting it. Furthermore, there are a couple of delightful cameo appearances that will make an appearance as well.”
Charlie Cox Explains Why Comic Book Adaptations Aren’t Faithful
Movie adaptations, rooted in the early days of cinema, have often drawn from classic novels as source material for feature films. These adaptations spark comparisons between the movie and the book, focusing on how accurately it portrays even the smallest details. But when it comes to comic book movies, there’s a twist. Superhero films seldom follow a single comic book storyline. Instead, they often combine characters, themes, and crucial moments from multiple comic book series into a fresh narrative. This leads fans to discuss and evaluate the accuracy of costumes, characters’ abilities, and background stories.
During our chat, Charlie Cox shared his perspective on why he approaches this role in the way he does. Throughout his time as Daredevil, Cox has breathed life into many well-known Daredevil comics on screen, including scenes from “The Death of Karen Page” and “The Man Without Fear.” The forthcoming reboot will even be named after Frank Miller’s “Born Again” story arc in the Daredevil comics. Cox expressed that adapting a comic book story directly takes away the excitement and suspense for the multitude of fans who have previously read the comic. He stated:
“We deviate significantly from the comic books when it comes to our storyline. We don’t stick to them closely for a few reasons. Firstly, if we were to follow a storyline strictly, it would lose its suspense since everyone already knows how it ends. You might have noticed a couple of intriguing characters in the D23 trailer – I didn’t mention them, you did. Unfortunately, the trailer has been removed, so I won’t comment on it anymore.”
