As a long-time comic book enthusiast who grew up with a passion for both DC and Marvel characters, I can wholeheartedly relate to Vincent D’Onofrio’s dream of playing Swamp Thing on the silver screen. The actor has demonstrated his versatility in portraying complex villains like Kingpin, and Swamp Thing’s environmental antihero persona seems tailor-made for his talents.
Vincent D’Onofrio is widely recognized for portraying the infamous villain Kingpin in Daredevil, yet he has another cherished comic book character in his sights. In the initial season of Daredevil (originally streaming on Netflix), D’Onofrio debuted as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, sharing the screen with Charlie Cox as the main character. Kingpin was instrumental in all three seasons of the highly acclaimed series, and was the first Marvel’s Netflix-verse character to transition to the MCU, appearing in Hawkeye before reprising his role in Echo. With D’Onofrio poised for a comeback in the forthcoming Daredevil: Born Again series on Disney+, there are whispers that he might also be switching allegiances to Marvel’s main rival.
At a recent Dragon Con event (reported by @JeremyJLop on X), D’Onofrio disclosed the DC Comics character he’s dreamt of portraying on screen since his childhood days. As a youngster, D’Onofrio was an avid comic book enthusiast, amassing collections from both DC and Marvel, and among his favorites was Swamp Thing. He expressed his desire to breathe life into this eco-centric antihero in live action. The actor stated:
“Perhaps you might share my enthusiasm for DC Comics, though I’m also deeply invested in Marvel due to my profession. Growing up, my comic book collection included Captain America, Spider-Man, Swamp Thing, and of course, Batman. And speaking of Swamp Thing…”
Vincent D’Onofrio Could Lead the DCU’s Swamp Thing Movie
1971 saw the birth of Swamp Thing, a character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. This hero or occasional antihero wields his innate powers to safeguard our planet from external threats as well as humankind itself. Swamp Thing isn’t merely an individual; it’s a role that various characters have assumed throughout the years, with Dr. Alec Holland being the most renowned. After getting caught in a swamp during his research project and drowning, he was reincarnated as Swamp Thing.
At Dragon Con, the panel wasn’t the initial occasion where D’Onofrio expressed interest in portraying Swamp Thing. After CBR published an article highlighting why the actor would be suitable for the role, D’Onofrio re-shared it with a comment “Love this.” A few days later, he posted another tweet independently, expressing his thoughts: “I agree with this piece.”
“Now I can’t get Alec Holland off my mind.”
The possibility that D’Onofrio’s wish to star in Swamp Thing may become a reality is growing, considering the upcoming changes announced by new co-presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran at the company. In the initial phase of the revamped DCU, a Swamp Thing movie is planned. It was previously suggested that Guillermo del Toro would direct the film, but Gunn has disclosed that James Mangold, director of Logan, will take charge instead. At present, information about Swamp Thing remains limited, with Mangold yet to confirm if he’s finalized the lead role. The storyline is also not fully known, but fans anticipate that Mangold’s film will be heavily influenced by Alan Moore’s highly successful Swamp Thing comic series.
In the upcoming Gunn movie, the character won’t make its debut in live-action for the first time. Way back in 1982, Wes Craven directed the Swamp Thing film with Ray Wise portraying Dr. Alex Holland. More recently, a Swamp Thing series was launched by Prime Video. Despite receiving mixed reviews, this series has managed to garner a dedicated fan base due to its impressive practical depictions of body horror.
In the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again,” set to debut on Disney+ in March 2025, Vincent D’Onofrio returns to portray Wilson Fisk (also known as Kingpin), while Charlie Cox takes up the role of Matt Murdock, more famously recognized as Daredevil.
