Daredevil’s Masks: Plot Twist or Comic Book Easter Eggs?

Despite basking in the laidback bliss of 2025’s TV season comebacks, there’s an undercurrent of excitement for what seems like the climax of the year: Marvel’s “Daredevil: Born Again”. No other forthcoming Marvel TV series could stir up this level of anticipation, except perhaps a potential revival of “Agatha All Along”, and the unveiling of the first trailer has only amplified that fervor among fans, triggering some intriguing storyline speculations and costume queries.

Among the conversations between Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk that are depicted, viewers see the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante actively at work, contrary to suggestions that his persona had largely retired. However, before fans can delve into any detailed theories about how this sequence fits with the events of the Netflix series, a shot is included suggesting that the Man Without Fear has a more active night life than anticipated.

Are These Daredevil Masks Plot-Related Or Just Fun Easter Eggs For Comic Fans?

Generally speaking, Charlie Cox as Daredevil has worn primarily two distinct costumes: the well-known red-hued outfit that is synonymous with the character, and the classic red-and-yellow suit for his humorous appearances in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. These two ensembles were indeed showcased among the masks seen in the Born Again trailer’s lineup.

It seems that two of the masks are designed to resemble the iconic red suit, although they have distinct variations such as horn shape, color shading, and overall structure. The “yellow” mask, on the other hand, appears more like polished gold than yellow, but still maintains a familiar look. However, I’m unsure about the characteristics of the remaining two masks.

Daredevil’s White Mask

In the opening scene, the mask worn by the viewers seems like polished silver with a strong white tint. This may be symbolic of the conclusion of Daredevil’s “Red Fist Saga,” as created by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto. Here, Matt Murdock acquires his initial all-white suit during a descent into Hell, later adorning a more refined and streamlined version of his costume. The white color symbolizes Daredevil’s “purified” persona.

While it would be thrilling if the live-action series fully explored Zdarsky’s plot, it seems rather improbable that Doctor Strange himself will make a significant appearance in the TV show. However, there’s still reason to remain optimistic. It’s plausible that Benedict Wong’s character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe could make an appearance instead.

Daredevil’s Black-ish Mask

Currently, we cannot definitively say what specific costume the darkest headpiece in the “Born Again” trailer represents. However, it seems to be a color that is quite close to black but may also be as deep as the darkest shade of maroon.

This suggests a possible reference to the controversial Armored Suit, first appearing in the 1993 “Fall From Grace” storyline by D.G. Chichester (writer) and Scott McDaniel (illustrator). Created due to the destruction of previous outfits during battles with Silver Sable and others, Matt found it essential for protection against dangerous adversaries. Initially, he wore it extensively, but it never became a preferred choice over time. Additionally, it influenced new armor designs for other Marvel characters.

Moreover, the darker outfit might be a nod to the latest “Shadowlands” crossover storyline by Andy Diggle and Billy Tan. However, it seems plausible that this would demand more attention on background details because in the original tale, the costume symbolizes Daredevil’s stint as an antagonist, working alongside Ghost Rider, The Punisher, Elektra, among others to bring down their friend and fellow Avenger. While it would be thrilling to see such a storyline unfold, I find it unlikely that the Disney+ series would introduce this as canon without dedicating an entire season to tell that tale.

Ah, I’ll probably keep pondering over it until the series “Daredevil: Born Again” officially premieres on March 4 at 9:00 p.m. ET. For those who have a Disney+ subscription and plan to stream it online.
