During the 1990s, Disney broadcast some of its top television shows for the “Disney Afternoon” time slot, creating hits like “DuckTales,” “TaleSpin,” “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” and “Darkwing Duck.” These connected series kept children enthralled for years, offering video games, comic books, toys, and a wealth of other fan-friendly content. Fast forward to today, as nostalgia fuels a large portion of the content on streaming platforms, Disney has recognized the enduring popularity of these shows and has been breathing new life into them through remakes and reboots.
In the 21st century, “DuckTales” was the first show to be given a new series, airing 69 episodes over three seasons on Disney+ from 2017 to 2021. Now, Disney is working on a long-awaited revival of another classic, “Darkwing Duck,” which will stream on their platform. The original series, broadcast from 1991 to 1992, focused on the titular superhero, known as Drake Mallard, and his sidekick Launchpad McQuack, who first appeared in “DuckTales.” Drake resides in the suburbs with his adopted daughter and juggles his roles as a loving father and an inspiring superhero, protecting the residents of St. Canard from distress.
The news about a potential “Darkwing Duck” comeback first surfaced in November 2020, but information was scarce afterwards. Luckily, an update from March 2024 confirmed that the project was still ongoing, so fans can look forward to further updates as development progresses. However, some details have recently been disclosed regarding the creative team and the anticipated release date.
Let’s Get Dangerous!
For several years, there was little to no news about the revival of “Darkwing Duck”. However, in March 2024, it was confirmed that the project was still being developed. As for “TaleSpin”, it currently appears to be on hold with no development underway. Regarding “Darkwing Duck” spearheaded by Seth Rogen, more details about its release are scarce at this point, but there have been some additional updates surfacing online since then.
By late 2024, it appears that Jim Cummings, known for voicing characters like Darkwing Duck, has confirmed that work on a new series is underway and he will reprise his role. The show is being produced by Seth Rogen along with his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg; however, no writer or complete cast list has been unveiled yet. Notably, Tad Stones, the original creator, mentioned in a 2024 Reddit Q&A that the project had progressed to the scriptwriting phase, but this team was later disbanded.
In spite of recent delays, it’s clear that Point Grey Pictures is still pushing forward with the development of “Darkwing Duck.” These minor updates suggest that the reboot is still very much alive and kicking. If it does move forward, it might be a while before we see episodes on Disney+ due to the lengthy process of creating animation. However, when the time comes, a new wave of fans will join the old ones in exclaiming, “Let’s get dangerous!
