Darth Vader NOT in Andor?! Here’s Why!

Season 2 of this series unfolds during the oppressive era of Imperial rule, yet surprisingly Darth Vader remains absent from the plot. Tony Gilroy’s Andor is frequently hailed as one of the finest TV shows within the Star Wars universe, but it strays far from familiar territory. Unlike many other Star Wars narratives that revolve around Jedi and Sith, this series deviates; instead, it delves into the emergence of the Rebel Alliance, offering a glimpse into the gritty reality of resisting the Empire from the ground up.

Despite the enthusiasm within the Star Wars fanbase for more Darth Vader, discussions about season 2 of Andor have sparked an unusual debate on whether Darth Vader would tolerate certain Imperial behavior. This conversation has certainly raised some eyebrows. However, showrunner Tony Gilroy has consistently maintained that Darth Vader will not appear in the show; he stated back in March, “We won’t be focusing on the Star Wars royal family“. So, the question remains: why is this the decision?

Tony Gilroy Feels Darth Vader Wouldn’t Be A Good Fit For Andor

He Doesn’t Have A Lot To Say

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gilroy gave a simple explanation for the show’s lack of a Vader cameo:

“Writing for Darth Vader is really limiting. I’ve done it. He doesn’t have a lot to say.”

He’s discussing the iconic appearance of Darth Vader in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, often regarded as one of his finest scenes in Disney’s Star Wars series. The reason for its popularity lies in its badass portrayal, showing off Darth Vader’s immense power as he ruthlessly slices through rebels. Gilroy is correct that this depiction of Vader is quite straightforward, yet it effectively evokes the terror we should feel towards him as a villain.

In the epic tale of “Star Wars,” Anakin Skywalker occupies a central role, posing a challenge for writers such as Gilroy. His narrative has been unfolded, his inner turmoil has been delved into, and there’s limited room for innovation – particularly during the era of the Dark Times. This is when Vader was at his most villainous, with not a soul in the galaxy expecting him to be saved. There should be no semblance of conflict within him regarding the Empire’s wickedness, as any such indications would lessen the impact of his subsequent, unforeseen act of kindness in “Return of the Jedi.

In Andor, there is a focus on conflict, both personal and external. This series presents both rebels and Imperials as complex characters, delving into their individual struggles. At this point in the Star Wars timeline, Darth Vader remains silent on such narrative themes.

Where Is Vader During The Events Of Andor Season 2?

He Has Other Things On His Mind

As a cinephile, I find it noteworthy that the enigmatic Emperor Palpatine sought to establish an Empire that would operate with minimal interference from him and his apprentice, allowing them to delve deeper into the dark mysteries of the Force. To achieve this, he gradually distanced himself from the Republic Senate, making rare appearances when he deemed it necessary. This autonomous approach was a philosophy he also passed on to his apprentice, instilling in them a similar attitude of self-reliance.

In the movie “Rogue One”, it was depicted that Darth Vader had built his stronghold on the Outer Rim planet Mustafar, where he oversaw the building of a Sith fortress to harness the Force’s potent concentration. He ruled over the Imperial Inquisitors stationed in the Mustafar system, who mainly focused on tracking down the remaining Jedi. He generally ignored insignificant rebels.

Darth Vader’s Andor Season 2 Absence Makes Rogue One All The Better

He Steps In Only When The Empire Has Failed

The significance of Darth Vader’s appearance in Rogue One is amplified because the completion of the Death Star marked a crucial milestone for Palpatine, who saw it as an unassailable symbol of his power within the Empire. He thought that no one would dare challenge him once the Death Star was built, allowing him to ignore the galaxy’s common folk indefinitely. It was after the Death Star’s completion that Palpatine swiftly abolished the Senate.

In “Rogue One”, Darth Vader makes his appearance as a crucial turning point, when the Death Star plans are under threat. Since everyone else in the Empire had failed, the Dark Lord of the Sith steps in at the critical juncture where Imperial mistakes could jeopardize the Death Star project. It’s entirely appropriate for Darth Vader to not appear in “Andor” season 2, and his eventual entrance only heightens its significance.
