As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Dave Bautista, who played the unforgettable Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After bidding adieu to the galaxy-saving Guardians in 2023, it seems that the former wrestler is grappling with a sense of nostalgia and longing, as he reminisces about the family bond shared with his co-stars and the lack of closure that came with his departure.
2023 marked the point where the former wrestler parted ways with the Guardians of the Galaxy series, indicating that he was prepared to step away from portraying the MCU’s version of Drax the Destroyer. Yet, reminiscing about his time within the franchise and its conclusion seems to bring a sense of melancholy, as he expresses regret for not having the opportunity to do something specific after his last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
In 2023, it emerged as Marvel Studios’ most triumphant release, partly due to the underperformance at the box office of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. Directed by James Gunn for the third and final time in a Marvel film, this movie concluded numerous ongoing storylines for characters that were once relatively unknown in Marvel Comics but have since become widely recognized. Drax, initially underwent significant changes compared to his comic book version, not all of which pleased Bautista. Despite considering quitting the role as the final installment approached, Bautista now reflects on the franchise’s conclusion with a profound sense of melancholy
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bautista shared thoughts on his long-standing role as Drax and expressed regret that the timing of events prevented him from experiencing a traditional closure when concluding such an iconic journey. Speaking about the emotional toll of not bidding farewell to some of his fellow actors, Bautista admitted feeling sadness over this missed opportunity
“I deeply miss the sense of family we had while working together on set. It’s tough to accept that we won’t be reunited there again – Chris, Zoe, Pom, Karen, Sean Gunn, James Gunn. That shared experience will not happen again, and it’s difficult to come to terms with this reality. Additionally, I feel a sense of incompleteness regarding that phase of my career. Though it’s behind me now, I never had the chance to bid farewell to everyone involved. I never got to attend the premiere, enjoy the moment with everyone, cry and say goodbye. That closure eluded me.”
Bautista went on to share that instead of finishing up with the regular Guardians series, his last shoot was for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. However, due to his dedication to M. Night Shyamalan’s project, Knock at the Cabin, he had to depart immediately once filming concluded on the special
“On my final night on set for ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’, we simultaneously wrapped up production for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’. Consequently, our last day of filming took place in Hollywood and ended around 3 or 4 am. Immediately after, I had to grab my belongings, rush to a hotel, board a flight, and head straight to Philadelphia for ‘Knock at the Cabin’ two days later. As a result, I didn’t get a proper chance to bid farewell to everyone. Instead, I was whisked away to another film set. Subsequently, I missed the press events and premieres for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’. This experience has left me with an incomplete feeling, as I never truly said goodbye to that character and my fellow cast members. Whenever I reflect on this, a sense of sadness lingers.”
Dave Bautista is the King of Hollywood Right Now
Despite the potential apprehension that comes with parting ways from a significant MCU role, as was evident in Robert Downey Jr.’s case after his exit from “Endgame”, Dave Bautista has no cause for concern due to the numerous promising roles he’s lined up for the future
Fresh from his performances in Denis Villeneuve’s two-part film adaptation of “Dune,” Bautista has just appeared in the sequel to Netflix’s “My Spy” titled “My Spy: The Eternal City.” This movie has garnered a large audience, though reviews have been mixed. Next up for him are roles in the action thriller “The Killer’s Game,” and the movies “The Last Showgirl” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson, as well as announced appearances in “Aang: The Last Airbender,” “Trap House,” “Afterburn,” a live-action adaptation of the epic poem “Beowulf” titled “Grendel,” and a film based on the story of “Grendal.”
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming buddy-cop comedy that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Momoa are working on together. This project was sparked by an engaging conversation on Twitter, fueled by fan enthusiasm and the magic of movie-making, which has now transformed into a real, in-development film! Recently, it was announced that Deadpool’s own Monica Baccarin will be joining this dynamic duo. She’ll bring her charm to life as Momoa’s girlfriend in the story, playing an intriguing character who complements his “loose cannon” cop role perfectly
