David Castañeda Reacts to ‘Umbrella Academy’ Series Finale Backlash: “I’m Very Proud” (Exclusive)

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can certainly appreciate David Castañeda’s perspective as an actor and his role in The Umbrella Academy. In the gaming world, we often face unexpected twists, turns, and narrative choices that challenge our expectations – much like the plot developments in the show.

Despite leaving many fans of “The Umbrella Academy” upset earlier this month with its finale, its star David Castañeda remains unfazed. He even views the backlash positively.

In the last season of Netflix’s unique superhero series, viewers witnessed the once vibrant relationship between Castañeda’s character Diego Hargreeves and Ritu Arya’s character Lila transform into a gloomy, loveless marriage. This situation ultimately led to romance between Lila and Diego’s brother, Number Five, portrayed by Aidan Gallagher. Many online commentators criticized this plot twist as unnecessary and felt that its progression was hastily executed, especially considering the lengthy development of Diego and Lila’s relationship over the years.

“Castañeda appreciates their tendency to take risks, even amidst criticism,” he notes in an exclusive sneak peek from the upcoming episode of the I’ve Never Said This Before with Tommy DiDario podcast, provided by The Hollywood Reporter. “I enjoy it when they switch things up, like making a seemingly friendly scenario turn into tension between Five and Diego. It sparked strong reactions, and I found myself thinking, ‘Wow, people are really worked up about this.’ I believe that’s positive. It’s good to evoke some kind of response, so that the storyline can be turned on its head.”

As a gamer, I find it’s always beneficial to remain inquisitive. “Why does this trigger an emotional response within me?” I often ponder. “Which game characters have managed to evoke feelings of familiarity or comfort, and why do their actions resonate with my own self-understanding?”

Viewers were equally astounded by the explosive conclusion of the series, as the cherished primary cast of adopted siblings selflessly gave up their lives in a plan to save the universe forever. This fatal ending was also irreversible, offering little room for sequels or unexpected returns, which left many disheartened fans in disappointment.

According to Castañeda, he felt taken aback upon discovering the farewell scene. “Initially, I secretly wished those pages might have been placeholders,” he admitted. However, once he understood they were not, Castañeda later found that the scene felt perfectly fitting.

“Reflecting on how everything unfolded, I can’t help but feel immense pride,” I express. “The collective effort we put into season four truly makes me overjoyed.”

The actor stated that he shed tears once the filming was completed. He expressed joy about how it all concluded, as well as happiness due to the entire season and series shooting experience. According to him, this was the most enjoyable season to film. There was a great deal of dedication, love, and creative energy put into it.

On Tuesday, the complete interview of Castañeda with I’ve Never Said This Before with Tommy DiDario is set to be published.
