Maura Delpero’s Italian World War II drama “Vermiglio” was crowned the best film at the 70th David Di Donatello Awards, an event that mirrors the Oscars and took place at Rome’s legendary Cinecittà film studio on Wednesday evening. Delpero additionally received the award for Best Director, contributing to a total of seven trophies won in this prestigious ceremony.
The movie that debuted in competition at the Venice Film Festival last year, outperformed the two predicted winners – Paolo Sorrentino’s film “Parthenope” and Andrea Segre’s “The Great Ambition”. “Parthenope”, a lavish, occasionally dreamlike homage to Naples, and “The Great Ambition”, a political biopic about Enrico Berlinguer, the Italian Communist Party leader, started with 15 nominations each for the David awards. Although “Parthenope” left empty-handed, “The Great Ambition” won two awards – Best Actor for Elio Germano who portrayed Berlinguer and Best Editing for Jacopo Quadri.
In the Sicilian period drama titled “The Art of Joy,” starring Tecla Insolia, she received the best actress award. The role was highly praised. In a different film category, Francesco Di Leva won the title for best supporting actor in Francesco Costabile’s thriller. Lastly, Margherita Vicario earned the David for best debut feature with her period drama “Gloria!,” which tells an interesting story about an all-female orchestra at a Church-run establishment during the early 1800s in Italy.
Timothée Chalamet brought a touch of Tinseltown flair to the event, gracing the awards with his presence to accept an honorary David for exceptional work in cinema. The prestigious lifetime achievement award was bestowed upon writer-director Pupi Avati (known for “Giovanna’s Father” and “Incanto”). Renowned director Giuseppe Tornatore (“Cinema Paradiso”) was honored with a special 70th anniversary David award.
In the Best International Film category, Sean Baker’s multiple Oscar-winning film Anora now boasts a new addition to its collection: a David statue.
