David Harbour Has An Awesome Theory About Frankenstein After Creature Commandos Episode 1, And I Think He’s On To Something

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for superhero sagas and dark humor, I must admit that the new DC universe spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran has piqued my interest. The debut of the animated ‘Creature Commandos‘ on Max was an intriguing blend of gore, comedy, and controversy – much like Gunn’s own live-action DC venture, ‘The Suicide Squad’.

The fresh DC universe spearheaded by James Gunn and producer Peter Safran has officially commenced with the debut of the initial two episodes of the animated “Creature Commandos”, accessible to those who have a Max subscription and an appreciation for darkly humorous superhero comedy filled with gore and gruesomeness. Similar to his own live-action DC tale, “The Suicide Squad”, Gunn has put together a motley crew of misfits and given them a contentious mission under the control of the detestable Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). However, as we delve deeper into the characters such as Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., The Bride (Indira Varma), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn) and others, a secondary plot featuring Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour) is emerging, with further development anticipated throughout the full season.

Following the debut of the first two episodes of Creature Commandos on Max, here’s a summary of what you might assume about Frankenstein: Initially, Frankenstein coerced his inventor, Victor, into crafting The Bride to provide a companion for the monster. However, The Bride fell in love with Victor instead, leading Eric to kill him. In an entertaining flashback sequence, we learn that Eric has spent countless centuries chasing after The Bride, unsuccessfully attempting to woo her.

Beyond what’s hinted at in the initial episodes regarding Eric Frankenstein, there are additional aspects worth noting. Initially, we encounter him on a luxury yacht, surrounded by women in bikinis. Later, he employs a helicopter pilot to surveil The Bride, and subsequent episodes reveal more signs of Frankenstein’s affluence. During an interview with David Harbour, the voice actor for Eric Frankenstein, I seized the chance to delve into his role in the new DC universe. I inquired about the source of Frankenstein’s wealth, to which Harbour chuckled and provided insights for TopMob:

Your question has sparked my curiosity. To be honest, I didn’t delve deeply into the topic, but the character you’re referring to exudes an aura of power and criminality, reminiscent of both an oligarch and a mobster. It’s hard to say for certain, given his questionable morality, but he appears to have his own set of ethical guidelines. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were involved in illegal activities such as drug or gun trafficking, or even robberies, big or small. He seems quite resourceful and determined when he sets his mind on something. In fact, if he ever found himself in a situation where he needed money to achieve a goal, like rescuing his bride, I believe he’d be more than capable of doing whatever it takes to acquire that wealth.

In the ending sequence of Episode 2 of “Creature Commandos“, we witness the efforts Eric made to regain The Bride’s affection. At first glance, these actions appear harmless, such as sending flowers to a market or attending her punk rock concert. However, David Harbour suggests that within this montage, Frankenstein had the potential for more “refined” transgressions. Instead, I find myself yearning for a spin-off series chronicling Eric’s life journey, accumulating wealth similar to Oz in “The Penguin“, albeit in an alternate reality, but with the same underlying theme.

The third installment of “Creature Commandos” series is set to air this coming Thursday, December 12, focusing on the robot character who detests Nazis – the G.I. Robot. Don’t forget to keep your Max subscription current if you want to catch a glimpse of how James Gunn’s universe grows in future DC films and TV productions.
