David Sandberg Reveals ‘Kung Fury 2’ Delay Due to Legal and Funding Issues

Recently, action enthusiasts received an unanticipated sneak peek at a film featuring Michael Fassbender portraying a Nazi alongside another actor as a gun-wielding U.S. president. Regrettably, due to a highly complex legal dispute, the 10-minute trailer might be the only footage available from this film, as its release to screens after a decade of production has been hindered by this conflict. The director and creator of the movie have now shared their feelings about the distressing controversy that has kept the film from reaching audiences.

Hollywood film releases frequently encounter challenges related to rights disputes, as some intellectual properties get stuck in a standstill while parties debate who should reap the most profits from popular characters or storylines. The issue with Kung Fury 2, however, stems specifically from one of the movie’s investors, Creasun Entertainment USA, who promised two-thirds of the film’s budget and $10 million to be given to VFX company Double Negative. Unfortunately, the payment was never made, which is the root cause of the movie’s problems.

According to Variety, Sandberg, fresh from releasing the film version of the chilling horror video game Until Dawn and directing the debatable Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, elaborated as follows:

As we ventured into the realm of Visual Effects (VFX), progress began to decelerate significantly. Things took an odd turn, and eventually, we discovered that our Chinese investor had essentially halted all financial contributions.

Following a lawsuit initiated to recover the unpaid debt, matters grew complex. Creasun alleged that funds had been misappropriated (despite no evidence being discovered during multiple financial audits of the project), even though they eventually agreed to pay what was owed. However, no payment was made and the legal proceedings persisted. Sandberg further stated:

Instead of outright blocking all efforts to resolve the problem, they seemed to ignore every single attempt, which was incredibly disheartening for me, being an artist who has dedicated years to it. There’s a multitude of people who have invested their emotions into this project, and I feel deeply sorry for them.

‘Kung Fury 2’ Will Be Released…Eventually

It’s undeniable that the upcoming film, Kung Fury 2, is a spectacle that defies description; it must be experienced to truly appreciate its grandeur. This cinematic endeavor is the brainchild of Sandberg, and the buzz generated by the leaked preview has ignited renewed enthusiasm for the project. If the necessary funds can be secured, production on this film may finally commence. As per the director, only visual effects work and a bit of editing remain, with an estimated cost of approximately $5-$10 million.

After successfully raising funds for his initial short film via Kickstarter, it appears that gathering the necessary finances should be a straightforward process – ignoring legal complications, of course. Primarily, Sandberg is confident that Kung Fury 2 isn’t finished yet and believes fans will eventually get to witness the wildest action blockbuster ever made. He stated:

This movie is simply amazing, yet I’m disappointed that I can’t share it right now. However, I remain hopeful that one day, it will be released to the public. In the meantime, we must all persevere. The film itself and the performances by Fassbender, Arnold, and others are nothing short of incredible. We had an unforgettable experience making this movie, and you could feel the love and passion behind every scene. It’s unfortunate that it’s stuck in limbo for now, but I believe that eventually, it will reach its audience.
