As a longtime devotee of the silver screen and a connoisseur of all things supernatural, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Constantine sequel. The news that a script is complete and waiting in the producer’s inbox has sent shivers of anticipation down my spine, despite Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s apparent fear of reading it.
The much-anticipated follow-up to the film Constantine has made a significant stride, as one of its producers, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, recently disclosed that a completed script is waiting in his email inbox. However, he’s hesitant to read it due to his eagerness for Constantine 2 to be excellent, just like the fans are.
As a seasoned email user with a history of both good and bad surprises, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as I gaze at that unread message in my inbox. The anticipation is killing me, yet fear grips my heart, hoping for the best while bracing myself for potential disappointment. In all honesty, I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it good news, but reality dictates that I’ll have to face whatever lies within those lines sooner rather than later. Given my schedule, I expect I’ll finally tackle it in the coming days, perhaps while on an airplane, where the hum of the engines can serve as white noise to mask any potential letdowns.
Originally launched in 2005 and inspired by the DC comic “Hellblazer,” the initial “Constantine” film was directed by Francis Lawrence and features Keanu Reeves, known for his roles in “The Matrix” and “John Wick.” As an ordinary individual with a remarkable ability, Reeves’ character can perceive the spirits of good and evil that coexist among us. However, this gift is a burden he finds unbearable. After being condemned to spend eternity in Hell for his misdeeds, Constantine embarks on a journey to make amends for his past actions. Transforming into a detective specializing in the supernatural and occult, he uses his abilities to investigate paranormal occurrences.
Initially, the film “Constantine” received a mixed response upon its debut. However, over time, it has amassed a dedicated fanbase, leading to speculation about a sequel for quite some years now. At the moment, specifics about the project are unclear, but there’s an anticipation that both Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence will be involved in its production.
Constantine 2 Director Wants to Make the Sequel R-Rated
After Constantine, significant transformations have taken place at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC. These changes have led to a reboot of their comic book movie franchise, orchestrated by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Although Gunn’s Superman is slated for release in 2025, initiating the DC Universe, there may still be room for a sequel to Constantine, under the “Elseworlds” label. This will allow for the telling of DC stories that exist outside the main narrative continuity.
Although details about “Constantine 2” remain undisclosed, director Francis Lawrence expressed in 2022 his intent to strive for an R-rating for the sequel. This suggests that “Constantine 2” could capitalize on Keanu Reeves’ fame and the box office success of other R-rated comic book adaptations like this year’s “Deadpool & Wolverine”, which grossed over a billion dollars. The director stated at the time:
One key aspect of the initial film, as per Warner Bros., was adhering to the guidelines for a PG-13 rating in regards to violence, gore, language, and sexual content. However, the ratings board deemed it too intense for a PG-13 and gave us an R rating instead. My major disappointment is that we ended up with an R-rated film when it should have been rated PG-13. If I had known the movie would receive an R, I would have crafted an R-rated movie – one that was significantly scarier and more violent. In essence, if given the choice, I would have made a true R-rated film.
This time around, personally speaking, I’m aiming for a genuine, hard-R rated adaptation of Constantine. I believe this is what fans have been hoping for since the start, rather than the PG-13 version that inadvertently received an R rating.
In the meantime, as we eagerly anticipate Keanu Reeves reprising his role as Constantine, there’s no shortage of projects on his plate. These include resuming his role as John Wick in the spinoff “Ballerina,” the comedy “Good Fortune,” a black comedy titled “Outcome” directed by Jonah Hill, and lending his voice to the beloved character, Shadow, in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
