The battle is over even before it even began for World War Two soldier Sgt. Rock.
It appears that the action war film titled Sgt. Rock, which DC Studios had planned to film this summer, will not proceed as scheduled, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.
The upcoming film, titled after a DC Comics character and directed by Luca Guadagnino, stars Colin Farrell in the lead role. At present, the production team is preparing for filming in England.
In addition to this, they were in the process of selecting actors to portray the men from Easy Company, a unit that engaged the Nazi forces in Europe during combat. Reports indicate that Mike Faist, who previously starred in Guadagnino’s “Challengers”, was considered for a role. It is also stated that a part for a female French resistance fighter had already been assigned.
Despite some ambiguity about its closure, it appears the project shut down due to logistical challenges related to outdoor filming. However, an insider hinted that the project might not have been cancelled altogether; instead, it could be reevaluated at year’s end for a potential summer shoot in 2026. It’s also been suggested that director Guadagnino lacks experience in action movies, which could have raised doubts among decision-makers, despite the budget being approximately $70 million – considered modest in the realm of comic book movies.
James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads at DC, initially didn’t plan to work on ‘Rock’, but they found a strong enough script by Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote both Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers’ and ‘Queer’, compelling enough to make space for it in their initial slate of projects.
Despite being set during World War II, the narrative unfolds with Rock joining forces with a French resistance fighter – specifically, one who’s female – in search of the enigmatic Spear of Destiny. This artifact is believed to be the very spear used to pierce Jesus Christ on the cross during his crucifixion. In legend, it’s said to possess extraordinary powers, and there’s a concern that the Nazis might acquire it before we can stop them.
Originally introduced by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert back in 1959, Sgt. Rock is a well-established character from DC Comics, having graced comic book pages for many years. Interestingly, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis have both considered playing the role on the big screen during Hollywood’s long-standing efforts to adapt the character for film. Unfortunately, it seems we may have to wait even longer for Sgt. Rock to shine in the limelight.
