As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless superhero franchises, I must say that the announcement of Mike Flanagan penning the script for the Clayface standalone film in DC Studios has left me thrilled. Flanagan’s mastery of horror and tragic narratives is undeniable, and his take on a character as fantastical as Clayface promises to be an exciting exploration of both Gotham City and human nature.
The DC Universe of James Gunn and Peter Safran is growing yet again, as a fresh villain film has been revealed. We’re still in the dark about who will portray the DCU’s Batman, but we’re gradually discovering the roster of adversaries he may face in this revamped series. While a Deathstroke/Bane crossover movie was unveiled last month, the most recent villain to receive a solo film is significantly more fantastical. The enigmatic Clayface will finally appear on the big screen for the first time as a live-action character – and DC has found an ideal writer for this project.
In the upcoming DC Universe, it’s Clayface who will star in his own solo film. Known for his chilling tales, Mike Flanagan is crafting the screenplay for DC Studios. As of now, a director hasn’t been chosen yet, but DC Studios has announced that the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026. This date suggests that they are optimistic about finding an excellent director to bring Flanagan’s script to life.
Making its first appearance in Detective Comics issue #40 back in 1940, Clayface is DC Comics’ inaugural shape-shifting character. Over time, this role has been taken up by various characters; however, Basil Karlo stands out as the most well-known. An esteemed actor before a car accident, Karlo employed a toxic substance to preserve his disfigured face. This chemical combined with his genetic makeup, granting him the unique ability to transform – an ability he misused to become one of Gotham City’s strongest criminals.
Mike Flanagan, known to horror enthusiasts for his impressive work, is the mastermind behind the underrated Stephen King sequel, “Doctor Sleep,” and Netflix hits such as “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Flanagan has long harbored a desire to bring the character Clayface to the big screen. In a since-deleted tweet from 2021, Flanagan shared his vision for a Clayface movie, describing it as a blend of horror, thriller, and tragedy. The film is said to have been in development since 2023, with rumors suggesting that the movie will not portray Clayface as an antagonist. Instead, the story could delve into Clayface’s origins or his life following his departure from a criminal lifestyle, where he became one of Batman’s trusted allies.
Clayface Was Almost ‘The Batman Part II’s Villain
Among DC Comics’ characters, Clayface stands out due to his gooey appearance, dramatic personality, and shape-shifting powers. Interestingly enough, he was nearly introduced in Matt Reeves’ realistic take on the The Batman series. Following the 2022 release of The Batman, rumors emerged indicating that Clayface might serve as the primary villain in The Batman Part II.
Matt Reeves dispelled the rumor about magical villains in ‘The Batman’ universe. This means characters such as Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze will not be making an appearance. Instead, fans speculate that the main antagonist could be the Court of Owls, hinted at in HBO’s ‘The Penguin’ series. Other possibilities include Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobblepot, Barry Keoghan’s Joker, newcomers like crime boss Black Mask, Victor Zsasz, or even Deathstroke.
Clayface hits theaters on Sept. 11, 2026.
