DC Unveils Its Own Cosmic Watcher in Exciting New Look at The Sandman Season 2!

In an upcoming season of Netflix’s “The Sandman,” a figure comparable to Marvel’s The Watcher will make his debut. While Uatu the Watcher is a well-known character from Marvel’s comic books and was brought to life in the animated series “What If…?” on Disney+, with Jeffrey Wright lending his voice, viewers will encounter DC’s counterpart in this show.

In a somewhat separate realm within the DC universe, you’ll often find The Sandman, although characters such as John Constantine or Martian Manhunter occasionally cross over into different stories. Essentially, The Sandman is built around the narrative of Dream, one of the Endless, a unique family of beings embodying concepts such as desire, death, and despair in an anthropomorphic form.

In the initial season of “The Sandman” on Netflix, viewers had a chance to encounter Dream (Tom Sturridge) and some of his fellow family members in real life. The second season of this show promises to present the complete Endless family, among them Adrian Lester portraying Destiny. A brief clip of “The Sandman” Season 2, recently unveiled by Netflix online, offers a glimpse of Lester as Destiny, the eldest member of the Endless.

In the comic series, The Sandman, Destiny can be seen as DC Comics’ counterpart to the Watcher. He is a mysterious, unbiased cosmic entity with vast knowledge spanning past, present, and future, seldom letting personal feelings influence his role in the universe’s events.

In the video, Destiny is shown wearing a black coat and holding a large book, separated from other family members as they bless Orpheus (Dream’s son) for his wedding. When Orpheus inquires whether he will offer him well wishes, Destiny replies in a flat tone, “I am Fate; I don’t wish. I know.

Destiny possesses an omniscient awareness and impartial judgment, much like the Watchers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – a council of higher-dimensional entities responsible for monitoring the entirety of the Multiverse.

Generally speaking, the Watchers tend to watch events unfold across the Multiverse but don’t interfere. Yet, an exception occurred in the story What If…?, where Uatu was compelled to break his vow due to Ultron’s plan to destroy numerous timelines.

In a slight variation, the two entities possess distinct powers. The Watchers are equipped with more tangible skills such as telepathy, time travel, teleportation, and energy control. On the other hand, Destiny’s primary power stems from his artifact, the Book of Destiny, which is bound to his arm and holds all knowledge across time, symbolized by its constant connection to him.

Destiny’s powers often require little more than a verbal command, allowing an Endless member to disclose crucial details which in turn might set off specific occurrences.

In the upcoming weeks, I’ll have the opportunity to showcase Destiny in action as I delve into “The Sandman” Season 2, which is set to premiere on Netflix. The first installment will be available on July 3, followed by the second volume on July 24.

Will Destiny Have a Role in the Wider DC Universe?

In other words, Destiny makes her first appearance in live action within the DC universe through The Sandman Season 2, even though The Sandman series isn’t related to the projects being handled by James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.

Initially, the character Destiny did not originate from The Sandman; instead, he made his debut in DC Comics’ Weird Mystery Tales back in 1972. Later on, he was reimagined as a member of the Endless within the context of The Sandman.

In other words, the character may find themselves with a role beyond “The Sandman” within the broader DC Universe, should the need arise. However, this new appearance might take a different shape and be portrayed by a different performer.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, it appears that the captivating tale of “The Sandman” has reached its conclusion with Season 2 on Netflix, leaving no immediate plans to explore further story arcs or characters from the graphic novels beyond the scope of the show. In an attempt to expand the “The Sandman” cinematic universe, Netflix introduced “Dead Boy Detectives,” but it seems these intellectual properties will soon be laid to rest following the finale of “The Sandman” in July.
