DC’s New Superman Originally Auditioned for This Phase 5 MCU Role

Initially, the actor chosen to portray Superman in James Gunn’s DC Universe had aspirations towards a role in a popular Phase 5 Marvel Cinematic Universe film. After devoting approximately ten years to Marvel Studios through the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn has ascended to the position of executive at DC Studios and is constructing his own movie universe for the DC brand. However, as his Superman film premieres, one of his key cast members disclosed that they had a near-miss collaboration earlier on.

David Corenswet, known for his role as Superman, disclosed a past audition attempt for the part of Adam Warlock in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Currently, Corenswet is basking in the limelight with DC Studios’ Superman release, making him the main character for one of the most iconic superheroes ever conceived. Yet, he has now made it known that this isn’t the only superhero role he pursued in recent years.

In a chat with director James Gunn and fellow stars Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult during Buzzfeed’s Puppy Interview, the quartet were asked to reveal roles that fans might find surprising they had auditioned for. Corenswet confessed that he once auditioned for Adam Warlock, marking his debut attempt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The well-known search for Adam Warlock’s casting was widely discussed after hints about his appearance in the third post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Eventually, Will Poulter won the role for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Not long afterwards, Corenswet began working with Gunn at DC Studios.

On July 11, 2025, the movie “Superman” premiered, marking director James Gunn’s debut in his new DC Universe. Starring Corenswet alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult, this film finds Clark Kent three years into his role as Earth’s protector. As he grapples with his initial encounters against Lex Luthor and Luthorcorps, he also struggles to maintain a balance between his life as a reporter and his superhero duties. “Superman” is currently showing in cinemas near you.

Other Actors With Marvel & DC Ties

Numerous performers have ventured into both Marvel and DC film productions throughout the years. Notable examples include Christian Bale (Batman, Gorr the God Butcher), Idris Elba (Bloodsport, Heimdall), and Ben Affleck (Batman, Daredevil). With Gunn’s appointment at DC Studios, that trend has significantly expanded, as many of his Marvel actors expressed a strong desire to collaborate with him again in the DC universe, which some might view as a “competitive” sphere.

Approximately a dozen stars who have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, primarily from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, have moved on to work with DC following their roles in the Marvel universe. For instance, Superman features Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, Nathan Fillion, and Sean Gunn in small new parts, while Wendell Pierce is cast as Perry White, a role he will take up after his appearance in Thunderbolts, set for release in 2025.

It’s highly likely that many actors who have worked on Marvel films will want to join the cast of the upcoming 12 confirmed projects in the new DC Universe.

In the upcoming months, as we eagerly await the arrival of Season 2 of “Peacemaker” from DC Studios this year, we can expect a flurry of casting updates and announcements that will significantly influence the direction of the DC Universe.
