As a die-hard Marvel fan, I couldn’t help but feel exhilarated when Deadpool 3 brought Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Logan (Hugh Jackman) together for an unforgettable team-up. The box office success of this R-rated masterpiece left everyone in awe, and the brilliant blend of humor and action was only amplified by the fantastic cameos, many of which were skillfully played by Jackman himself.
Having grown up as a huge fan of the X-Men comics, I can tell you that the “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie was nothing short of a dream come true for me. The way Ryan Reynolds brought the Merc with a Mouth, Wade Wilson, to life on the big screen and Hugh Jackman’s raw portrayal of Logan left me speechless. Their dynamic on-screen chemistry was electrifying, tearing through the MCU like a force of nature.
In the chaotic, post-apocalyptic setting depicted during Deadpool’s montage of dealing with Wolverine variants, we come across one particular variant with an excessive amount of body hair and only one arm. In this alternate timeline, Earth has succumbed to destruction, leaving Logan as one of the last survivors in Marvel lore’s Age of Apocalypse. This reality is marked by Logan transforming into the most dreaded figure on the planet.
Starting from 1995, a Marvel comic series featured Apocalypse seizing control of Earth following Charles Xavier’s demise, leading to an alternate universe. In this altered reality, Wolverine (Logan) loses one hand and equips it with a metal shield for his claws to function effectively, making him an even more menacing hero. Notably in the movie adaptation, we encounter this Logan at a specific point and explore how close he is to transforming into Earth’s most dangerous adversary.
Logan takes over where Apocalypse left off in this timeline from hell
Based on his black and red attire and untamed hair, it’s clear that this iteration of Weapon X, a.k.a Deadpool, appears more benign on favorable days. However, as time progresses, this Wolverine spin-off faces grim circumstances. Ultimately, he succumbs to darkness towards the conclusion of his reality, following Logan’s selfless act of sacrificing himself for judgment by the Celestials instead of condemning the entire planet post-Apocalypse’s rule. Tragically, this intervention leads to him undergoing Celestial technology enhancements, escalating his power and causing him to lose touch with reality. Renaming himself Weapon Omega, he assumes the role of a new Apocalypse.
In this twisted reality, I, once the heroic Wolverine, now embrace my new role as a villain. Following in the footsteps of my predecessor, I oversee the brutal elimination of Earth’s populace. The once revered Magneto and Rogue’s son, Charles Lensherr, are marked for death at my command. My heart is heavy as I find myself locked in a continuous struggle with my former love, Jean Grey. This heart-wrenching turn of events unfolds in one of Marvel’s darkest alternate timelines, where these two unlikely characters found each other. Fans couldn’t get enough of this chilling tale.
It’s plausible that Hugh Jackman may rejoin the MCU through “Avengers: Secret Wars,” but it’s unlikely that he’ll portray the same character. Nevertheless, considering recent MCU developments, the prospect of the X-Men officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and showcasing their mutant abilities is intriguing.
Could Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom set up a chance for Wolverine turning evil too?
Marvel Studios has made it clear that even their finest heroes, like Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom, can become formidable villains. This idea of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine turning to the dark side is intriguing, given his previous brief appearance where he ended up with a villainous outcome as a different version of Logan.
As a long-time fan of the X-Men franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment with the latest news regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Having grown up watching the X-Men movies and reading the comics, the thought of an “X-Men” movie being put on hold is disheartening.
An “Age of Apocalypse” movie may not be Marvel’s top priority, but if it ever gets made, it would be thrilling to see Jackman use his claws for evil instead of good, just as intriguing as a corrupted Tony Stark. The unexpected turn of Doctor Doom into Marvel’s beloved billionaire philanthropist is captivating, but the idea of Wolverine ruling the world as a terrifying despot is an enticing fantasy we can’t help but crave.
