Deadpool 3's Ryan Reynolds Wants to See Channing Tatum Return as Gambit

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rollercoaster journey of iconic characters from comic books to the silver screen, I must say that the recent appearance of Channing Tatum as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine was a long-awaited breath of fresh air. The character’s complex history, much like my own pursuit of finding the perfect cup of coffee on a Monday morning, has been a labor of love for fans and actors alike.

In the latest film, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) teamed up to let Channing Tatum bring Gambit to life on the big screen. However, Reynolds isn’t content with just that; he wants the excitement to keep growing. As Deadpool and Wolverine journey through The Void, they stumble upon unexpected partners in Blade (Wesley Snipes), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Laura/X23 (Dafne Keen), and Gambit. For years, Tatum has been linked to a possible Gambit movie, but it just couldn’t break free from development limbo. Fortunately, Reynolds gave the character a fresh start, as Tatum’s cameo was one of the standout performances in the film.

Ryan Reynolds posted on Instagram expressing his admiration for Channing Tatum’s portrayal in the movie. He shared behind-the-scenes photos of Tatum as Gambit, noting that their struggles to bring accurate films to life for Gambit and Deadpool were similar. Reynolds commended Tatum’s determination and believed he was perfect for the role. Effectively, Reynolds casually urged for Tatum to finally receive his Gambit movie.

“Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play. His story is similar to my road on Deadpool — in that Chan spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen. Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. Some characters can only exist with a one in a billion pairing and this is it. Gambit found his author in Chan. He’s one of the coolest, smartest characters in Comics and still largely unexplored.

Why Channing Tatum’s Gambit Movie Never Happened

Channing Tatum’s connection to the character Gambit from the X-Men team stretches back more than 15 years. Initially, Tatum was thought to portray this card-tossing hero in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” However, Gambit’s role was removed from the movie’s script. Interestingly, Gambit made his live-action first appearance before Tatum’s brief appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” In fact, Taylor Kitsch played Gambit, and Ryan Reynolds appeared as a less refined version of Deadpool in their shared debut in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

In 2014, Channing Tatum was confirmed for the lead role in a Gambit film. But, unfortunately, the project faced numerous obstacles as different directors such as Doug Liman, Gore Verbinski, and Rupert Wyatt came and went from the production team. After Disney bought the X-Men characters from 21st Century Fox, many believed that the Gambit movie was no longer alive or active.

As of now, there’s no concrete news that Channing Tatum will reprise his role as Gambit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After the debut of Deadpool and Wolverine, Kevin Feige, the MCU president, spoke about the matter but didn’t provide a clear answer. Although he didn’t dismiss the idea outright, it seems we might have to be patient before any official news is shared. In his words:

“As for whether Gambit will appear in a future live-action project, I’m afraid I can’t confirm that! [laughs] However, it’s heartwarming to see your enthusiasm!”
