As a lifelong movie fan who’s seen the industry evolve over the decades, I can confidently say that Summer 2024 has been quite the rollercoaster ride at the box office. The delays from last year’s Hollywood labor struggles certainly added an extra layer of unpredictability, but it’s safe to say that we’ve had our fair share of triumphs and tribulations.
2024 summer at the box office will be notable for its mix of highs and lows, a result that industry insiders anticipated due to delays from 2023’s Hollywood labor disputes affecting numerous productions. The season began sluggishly in May but picked up speed in June and July, delivering much-anticipated hits. However, the final month of August has fallen short of expectations, ending with less fanfare than expected.
With no major movies premiering in cinemas last Friday, the top 10 box office chart this week bears a striking resemblance to last week’s figures, but with slightly lower earnings. Let’s examine the figures provided and discuss further afterward.
Deadpool & Wolverine Wraps Summer 2024 At The Top Of The Box Office, Gets Set To Cross $600 Million Domestically
2024 has been a fantastic year for movies, especially Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine. To be honest, the Marvel Cinematic Universe stumbled a bit in 2023. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a hit, but it didn’t quite shine as brightly due to some setbacks – Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania and Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped. However, the first R-rated film in the franchise has really helped turn things around for us superhero fans!
Based on recent box office figures, Deadpool & Wolverine added an additional $15.2 million to its domestic earnings during late August and early September, securing its fifth box office victory in the last six weeks. This success was briefly interrupted by Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus earlier this month. To date, the film has amassed a total of $599.5 million in North America, making it likely to surpass $600 million over Labor Day weekend. Only five other Marvel Cinematic Universe films have achieved this milestone: Avengers: Endgame ($858.4 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.8 million), Black Panther ($700.1 million), and The Avengers ($623.4 million).
Although Deadpool & Wolverine may not be the summer blockbuster of 2024 (that title goes to Kelsey Mann’s Inside Out 2), there’s no denying that it will be remembered as one of the year’s most significant cinematic triumphs. Despite its R-rating potentially limiting its audience, it has outperformed Chris Renaud’s Despicable Me 4 and set a new record as the most successful R-rated release ever, surpassing Todd Phillips’ Joker.
Considering the lineup of movies scheduled for release in 2024, one might ponder which films could potentially dethrone others in global box office standings. The upcoming Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie á Deux has strong potential to challenge the popularity of Deadpool and Wolverine. As we move towards the end of the year, high-profile releases like Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, Jon Chu’s Wicked, and David Derrick Jr., Dana Ledoux Miller, and Jason Hand’s Moana 2 will enter the scene. Interestingly, all three of these films are set to be released around Thanksgiving, creating a competitive environment among them.
New Releases Reagan And Afraid Fail To Stir Up Much Interest On The Big Screen
1. The top three films at the box office this weekend (Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, and Justin Baldoni’s It Ends With Us) maintained their positions due to a lack of significant interest in the latest releases, such as Sean McNamara’s Reagan featuring Dennis Quaid and Chris Weitz’s AI-focused horror film Afraid.
ShowBiz Direct distributed the film titled “Reagan”, which made it into the Top 10, securing a position just ahead of Lee Issac Chung’s Twisters. In its seventh week of release, Twisters earned an additional $7.2 million in the domestic market, bringing its total to $258 million so far. “Reagan” made $7.4 million while being screened at 2,754 theaters.
The movie, featuring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, produced by Blumhouse, didn’t fare well at the box office. Despite being shown in over 3,000 cinemas across the nation over the past three days, it only earned $3.7 million, translating to a disappointing average of around $1,232 per theater. Sony Pictures had high hopes for this film, but its performance was lackluster.
These results aren’t contrary to what the industry usually anticipates; August’s end is often viewed as a place where less promising films are released, believing they have no chance of success during other periods. Yet, there’s optimism that once we turn the calendar page to September, box office figures will rebound.
Starting a new topic, Halloween season is now underway, and it’s set to make a grand entrance this coming Friday with the premiere of Tim Burton’s movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. Make sure to check back here at TopMob next Sunday to find out how well it fares in its opening weekend and see if it stirs up the Top 10 list.
