The director of the 2016 “Deadpool” movie, Tim Miller, thinks that Marvel Studios is holding back its most potent secret weapon. While they are strategically mapping out the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Miller suggests that the Marvel intellectual properties could gain significantly from a future adaptation of the X-Men universe. Additionally, he disclosed his earlier intentions to create an X-Men film. However, a merger took place instead.
In terms of his professional endeavors, Miller has experienced a combination of successes and setbacks. Following the release of Deadpool, he helmed Terminator Dark Fate in 2019, which was the final installment in the Terminator series before its creators decided to pause the franchise. Subsequently, Miller assumed the position of executive producer for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and began working on Netflix’s animated series Love, Death & Robots.
The director behind Deadpool is presently highlighting his involvement in the fourth installment of an animated series. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed his desire to revisit the superhero genre, which he’s been absent from for close to a decade. Miller views the X-Men franchise as Marvel’s hidden strength and has even sought Kevin Feige’s approval for the opportunity to craft a film centered on the cherished mutants.
I believe Marvel has an untapped resource they haven’t revealed yet – the entire X-Men universe, which initially hooked me on comics. The X-Men are my top picks among characters. I penned a letter to [Marvel executive] Kevin Feige, expressing, ‘If there’s anything you’d allow me to work on in the Marvel Universe, it would be the X-Men.’ Prior to the merger, I had an X-Men movie in production at Fox, which would have been fantastic. The film was based on X-Men issue 143, a blend of Home Alone and Alien.
Miller seems open to exploring various superhero universes for adaptation. He even hinted at DC as a potential choice: “However, if DC were to tackle The Authority someday, that’s my all-time favorite comic – it’s like the Justice League but with lethal actions. I believe there are still many untold stories and unique perspectives within this genre.
The ‘X-Men’ Will Return in the Post-Endgame Era
At some stage, you can expect to see the X-Men back on the big screen. It’s merely a question of when negotiations are finalized, and Marvel Studios officially confirms it. While the Avengers take priority at the moment, Miller’s observation that Marvel shouldn’t underestimate the allure of mutants might hold some truth.
As per current news, Marvel Studios appears to be strongly contemplating Jake Schreier as the director to resurrect the X-Men series. This decision stems from Schreier’s proven potential with his work on the most recent superhero blockbuster, Thunderbolts. While Tim Miller seems deeply invested in the X-Men intellectual property, he may not be a top choice for Marvel as a director. Schreier might be an ideal filmmaker to spearhead the reboot, and Miller himself thinks that Schreier’s vision for the genre is commendable.
I found “Thunderbolts” to be a fantastic movie. Florence Pugh delivered an outstanding performance, and all the other actors were equally impressive. The action scenes were well-executed and felt realistic. What truly made the film stand out was its thematic consistency – it’s a rare treat when everything comes together so nicely. It’s easy to overlook how important that is until you experience it in a movie like this one.
