Deadpool Officially Confirms He Is Better Than Jesus Christ (At The Box Office)

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the box office battle between Deadpool and Jesus Christ is one for the history books! It’s fascinating to witness Marvel Studios’ daring superhero road trip outshine even the Son of God himself.

It appears that the world continues to enjoy Deadpool, the character known as the Merc with a Mouth, who delivers R-rated dialogue filled with fourth-wall breaks and meta references. In its second week in theaters, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is still enjoying success at the box office, earning an astounding $395 million domestically and breaking records as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made. This new milestone has been a dream come true for Marvel Studios (even to the tune of a Madonna song), as Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds) and the Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) have managed to dethrone “The Passion of the Christ” from its position held for the past 20 years.

In 2004, when it was initially released, the director’s dramatic retelling of the final 12 hours of Jesus’ life before his crucifixion gathered an impressive $370 million at the box office. Now, sitting comfortably in first place is Marvel’s superhero journey, but “The Passion of the Christ” follows closely behind, even outperforming Ryan Reynold’s standalone “Deadpool,” which earned over $363 million domestically in 2016. This remarkable feat was accomplished by a third installment that stemmed from what could have been one of the most daring comic book movie franchises ever made. However, considering Deadpool’s boast about besting Jesus in his final cinematic appearance in “Deadpool 2,” this shouldn’t come as a shock.

Deadpool is still in the same sentence as Jesus

Before “Deadpool & Wolverine” – known for its extended sequences of fan-service and adult content – was made, “Deadpool 2” had already joked about Mel Gibson’s biblical movie, “The Passion of the Christ.” During a scene in which Deadpool (Wade Wilson) escapes with his friend Dopinder (Karan Soni), he boasts about being mentioned alongside Jesus in the film. He says, “The Passion of the Christ, then me. At least domestically. We outperformed them overseas, where there’s no such thing as religion.” As the franchise continues to thrive, they may need to revise this joke for future installments.

In the realm of “Deadpool 2,” I was part of the audience who found one joke particularly daring, though maybe not for the reason you’d think. As Rhett Reese, the writer behind all three movies, explained in the commentary track (via ComicBook.com), this risky gag hinged on its unpredictability. He said, “It was a gamble because it could have gone either way; we would have had to modify it if something else emerged.” Fortunately, nothing did, and now this joke carries even more significance given that Marvel’s Jesus has dethroned the original Jesus. Yet, while Deadpool may have snapped a 20-year streak, there’s a possibility that the superhero’s triumph could be overshadowed by Mel Gibson and his upcoming biblical epic.

Mel Gibson might resurrect a win to take over Deadpool & Wolverine

Just as fans have eagerly waited for years to see Wade and Logan together on screen, and similarly, there’s been a long wait for Mel Gibson to complete his portrayal of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, following his 2004 film. In 2023, whispers of a 2025 release for “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection” circulated online, but since then, nothing concrete has been confirmed. The only substantial update came from Gibson himself, who disclosed in an interview that year that he had written two scripts, each markedly distinct from the other.

“Gibson shared that he has two scripts, one of which is highly structured and robust, similar to what one might anticipate, while the other is akin to a psychedelic journey, like an acid trip. He explained, ‘It’s about exploring other dimensions and realities. For instance, you find yourself in Hell, witnessing angels falling. It’s quite intense.’

If this project gets made, it could mean another thrilling battle at the box office between Deadpool and The Messiah – a matchup I never imagined typing as a gamer. Sometimes, Hollywood really takes the cake!
