Deadpool & Wolverine Almost Had An Entirely Different Lady Deadpool Design

As a longtime fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I must say that the inclusion of Lady Deadpool (Blake Lively) in the sequel was a delightful surprise. While I was initially intrigued by the concept art showcasing a more elaborate costume design, I have to admit that the sleeker version worn by Blake Lively in the final cut was a refreshing change. It’s always fascinating to see how concepts evolve during production and the final outcome often surpasses expectations.

The film Deadpool & Wolverine showcases an authentic portrayal of Lady Deadpool (Blake Lively), who was initially envisioned differently. The sequel has smashed box office records and is widely praised as a heartfelt tribute to the main superheroes and the Marvel Fox cinematic universe’s past. A notable scene showcases various interpretations of Deadpool, one being played by Blake Lively, known as Lady Deadpool. Drawn directly from the comic books, Lady Deadpool, or Ladypool, had a distinct yet familiar costume design. However, recently unveiled concept art for Deadpool & Wolverine suggests that she almost appeared with an entirely different appearance.

Costume artist Jonay Bacallado has been sharing his artwork for Deadpool and Wolverine on social media platforms, and a recent post on Lady Deadpool unveiled her initial design that contrasted significantly with the one eventually worn by Blake Lively in the movie. On his Instagram, Bacallado talks about how distinct the original concept art was from the actual costume seen in the film.

Working on Deadpool variant costumes for the team was an incredible experience, filled with joy, experimentation, and a touch of madness. One of my personal favorites that made it to the big screen is Ladypool. We aimed to honor the iconic comic representations while maintaining our signature blend of realism. This meant meticulously examining every detail of her suit, ensuring every aspect was just right. Compared to the familiar male version we adore, Ladypool’s proportions are quite different, so we highlighted her curves and sinuousness in her new design.

The final film version featured a streamlined design instead of the intricate layers and hidden compartments present in the original concept art. Lady Deadpool doesn’t have a significant role in the “Deadpool & Wolverine” series, but keeping things simple and adhering to her comic book appearance makes her cameo more enjoyable for fans.

Lady Deadpool Was Originally Inspired by Blake Lively

It’s quite logical to consider Blake Lively for the role of Lady Deadpool, or Ladypool, given her fitting portrayal and marriage to fellow franchise actor Ryan Reynolds. However, her association with the character predates even Reynolds’ involvement with Deadpool. In an appearance on LIVE with Kelly and Mark, Lively revealed that comic creator Robert Liefeld had initially drawn the character to resemble her, as he and his wife were fans of Blake’s TV show Gossip Girl.

“Essentially, Ryan wasn’t linked to Deadpool, and Deadpool wasn’t connected to Ryan either. The plan was for him to produce this movie, but it was more of a fantasy than a reality. It never had a chance of coming true. As for LadyPool, Rob Liefeld drew her based on his and his wife’s watching Gossip Girl. Isn’t it fascinating how things coincide? My husband and I got married around the same time Deadpool was created.”

As a devoted fan, I must say that among the countless appearances in the blockbuster movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Lady Deadpool stands out as a delightful, though smaller, addition to the mix. The team behind this masterpiece, led by Ryan Reynolds, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the film’s excellence by deciding to omit a cameo that held deep personal significance for them. Instead, this decision underscores their dedication to delivering a superior product.
