As a seasoned movie buff who’s seen more superhero films than I care to count, I must say that the latest collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, aptly titled “Deadpool & Wolverine“, is a visual feast for the comic book enthusiasts out there. The film’s concept art book has been a treasure trove of unused variants, and let me tell you, they are nothing short of spectacular.
After the unveiling of Deadpool & Wolverine, the web was drowned in leaked concept art and costumes from the movie, offering glimpses of unused characters. Yet, a sneak peek at the upcoming official concept art book has brought forth more variants, and they might just be the best ones yet!
Thanks to The Artbook Collector, enthusiasts now have access to the official concept art book filled with numerous discarded designs. Among the highlights (clearly visible in the attached snapshot) are the Zombieverine, Babyverine, and Hulkverine. The Zombieverine is a nod to the well-known comic series Marvel Zombies, previously referenced in Spider-Man: Far From Home. One can envision that the Babyverine was perhaps Ryan Reynolds’ brainchild, inspired by the baby legs joke from Deadpool 2. However, if a nearly invincible, rage-filled Wolverine wasn’t intimidating enough, imagine him towering over 7 feet tall and weighing around 600lbs. The Hulkverine would have been an awe-inspiring spectacle on the big screen.
The book additionally features some Deadpool versions that didn’t ultimately make it, such as one where he donned outfits inspired by each of the Avengers’ signature elements. This Deadpool particularly enjoys making jokes about the Avengers; his attire would have incorporated items like Captain America’s shield, Thor’s winged helmet, Hawkeye’s bow, Iron Man’s torso armor, and Black Widow’s electrified wristbands. Furthermore, it includes previously disclosed variants, such as the Ronin-Deadpool and a revised costume for the cowboy Deadpool variant.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Variants Were Cut Due to Budget Constraints
Despite the numerous variations of Deadpool and Wolverine shown in the movie, fans might continue to ponder why certain designs were excluded, given the recently released concept art book. In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, editors Shane Reid and Dean Zimmerman disclosed the criteria for choosing these variants. According to Zimmerman, the decision was primarily influenced by budget limitations, as the iconic yellow and brown suit worn by Hugh Jackman for a brief period cost $100k on its own. Consequently, director Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman had to carefully select which variants to incorporate due to these financial restrictions. Zimmerman added:
As a cinephile, let me tell you, sometimes we need to get creative with our resources. So, instead of saying “Hugh, would you mind stripping down and nailing yourself to a cross?”, it’s more like, “Hugh, can you give us a shirtless crucifixion scene?” To which he replies, “Absolutely, no problem.” Now, picture this – a horde of pink skulls scattered about, setting the stage for our comic book-inspired scene. And guess what? I’ll age myself up for a bit role. It’s all a careful balance of creativity and practicality, ensuring we stay within budget and on schedule.
The action-packed duo of Deadpool and Wolverine wrapped up their theatrical journey, earning more than a billion dollars worldwide, making it the top-grossing R-rated film ever produced. Now you can own this blockbuster hit digitally. Notably, its first-week home video sales have surpassed those of John Wick, setting a new record for highest grossing R-rated home video release.
