As a lifelong film enthusiast who’s seen more movies than I can count, I must say, the creation of the ‘Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ category at this year’s Golden Globes is a breath of fresh air. It’s about time popular films got their due recognition from the “snooty” awards panels!
The nominations for the Golden Globe Awards have sparked the expected grumbles about snubbed films and unexpected nods. However, amidst these common complaints, there’s a fresh category that aims to silence annual criticisms regarding popular films being overlooked by “elitist” judging bodies. This change has opened the door for Marvel Studios’ blockbuster hit to secure a nomination, but it faces tough rivals from supernatural entities such as ghosts, witches, aliens, and others.
This year, a new category titled “Outstanding Cinematic and Box Office Recognition” has been introduced. It honors films that have both made a substantial impact at the box office and received widespread praise from audiences. For a film to be eligible, it must have generated at least $150 million globally, with a minimum of $100 million from U.S. ticket sales, or it should have garnered comparable popularity through digital streaming platforms.
Clearly, this has paved the path for Marvel Studios to introduce Deadpool and Wolverine, whose joint venture earned an impressive $1.6 billion globally at the box office. Yet, it’s important to note that this won’t be a stroll through a tranquil multiverse for the MCU’s champions. Despite the fact that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s film, brimming with cameos and multiversal antics, ignited the box office, it is not the only blockbuster vying for recognition this time around. It will take more than a catchy soundtrack and clever one-liners to secure victory in this contest.
Who is Up Against ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at the Golden Globes?
Although a superhero film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, known for their fame, might seem like an obvious choice to win popular awards in the coming months, the most significant competition for Marvel’s dynamic duo emerges from another enchanting pair – Glinda and Elphaba.
Over the past few weeks, the movie musical has been sweeping through the box office, setting new records and ending a string of disappointing Broadway adaptations. Additionally, it has received nominations for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress – Musical or Comedy (Ariana Grande). The first installment of Jon M. Chu’s musical production, despite the director not receiving a nomination himself, has become a massive hit, and in many polls, it is predicted to be a tough competitor.
Joining the fray is “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult favorite, which garnered plenty of affection from viewers when it was released in September. Competing against it are “Alien: Romulus,” “Gladiator II,” “Inside Out 2,” “Twisters,” and “The Wild Robot” – each offering significant box office earnings and positive feedback from the audience. Predicting who will emerge victorious is quite challenging, but this year’s nominees have certainly showcased an obsession with sequels, as six out of eight nominations are follow-ups.
