Deadpool & Wolverine’s Matthew McConaughey Cameo Based on Clint Eastwood

Deadpool & Wolverine's Matthew McConaughey Cameo Based on Clint Eastwood

As a dedicated cinephile and comic book enthusiast with over 30 years of experience under my belt, I must say that the concept art for Cowboypool in Deadpool & Wolverine is a real treat! The original design, inspired by Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name,” would have been an awesome tribute to one of the greatest western heroes in cinema history.

In the climactic part of the movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, the two main characters (played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman) squared off against multiple versions of Deadpool. One of these versions was inspired by classic Western movies and voiced by Matthew McConaughey. This character, known as Cowboypool in the comics, is just what you’d expect – a cowboy-styled Deadpool, complete with a hat, gun, and a gruff Southern accent. The design of this variant would have paid tribute to the greatest Western hero in cinema if it had been different.

The main character in the upcoming film appears to draw influence from famous Western actors like John Wayne, Gary Cooper, and Randolph Scott. However, it’s Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” from Sergio Leonne’s Dollars trilogy who seems to have had the most impact on this character. An artist named Jonay Bacallado recently shared concept art for Deadpool & Wolverine on Instagram, and it turns out that Cowboypool was initially intended to closely resemble Eastwood’s iconic figure. In the movie, the Cowboypool character sports a bandolier over his chest, with a cowboy hat, and two revolvers. But the original design would have made him look more like the character from The Good, The Bad & the Ugly, wearing a poncho. Moreover, it was planned that he would wear a red fur vest and dark brown chaps. In the caption, Bacallado explained the creative process for Cowboypool and revealed that this version was one of the first to be considered for the film. He wrote:

It appears that you are asking for Clip Studio, where “Clips” is a placeholder for “Studio”. In this studio, we have “Mayes”, “Rudeo” and “Eastwood”.

Over the past few weeks, the internet has been overflowing with unused concept art featuring Deadpool and Wolverine. Artists have been excited to share their rejected designs with fans, which include a unique take on Cowboypool, as well as alternate designs for Cavillerine (Jennifer Garner’s Elektra), Jennifer Garner’s Elektra in a different style, and an intriguing Deadpool/Wolverine hybrid. Fans have been eagerly appreciating these designs, but are now expressing their disappointment that they didn’t make it into the movie.

In addition to unveiling their exceptional designs, these concept arts are simultaneously being released, coinciding with the preparation of an upcoming official book. Artist Wesley Burt first hinted at this book’s release. Burt has yet to set an official date for the book, merely stating that it is in progress. Whispers indicate that the art book may be available from October onwards. However, Marvel Studios remains silent regarding its current status. It’s standard practice for studios to publish concept art/storyboard books for their hit movies, particularly superhero films. But without a confirmed release date, fans can only speculate by browsing social media for glimpses of what could have been featured in the movie.
