Deadpool & Wolverine's Ryan Reynolds Says Marvel Loves Gambit

As a long-time Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation when it comes to the potential future of Channing Tatum as Gambit. After years of waiting and what seemed like an endless series of roadblocks, Tatum finally got his chance to shine in Deadpool & Wolverine, and boy, did he deliver!

Initially, the excitement revolved around Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Logan/Wolverine when Deadpool and Wolverine were first announced. However, the film turned out to be packed with unexpected elements, one of which was giving Channing Tatum an opportunity to play Gambit on the silver screen. For years, Tatum had been associated with this role, but it was shelved following Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox. Nevertheless, his captivating performance as Gambit was a delight for fans, and even Marvel expressed satisfaction with his portrayal according to Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds.

During an Entertainment Weekly Awardist podcast conversation, Reynolds shared that Marvel was quite captivated by Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit. Though he’s unsure about Tatum’s future as the character, Reynolds finds their excitement an optimistic sign for a potential comeback. In his words, “Marvel is really into Tatum’s performance as Gambit, and I think it’s encouraging that they’re so enthusiastic about him returning to the role.

I’m not privy to the specifics of Marvel’s bookkeeping meetings, but I can tell you they seem quite passionate about him in this role. It reminds me of my own experience. Once you prove something is effective, that seems to be what they’re looking for. At times, they simply want to see it being executed.

In a way that echoes Reynolds’ experience, I can see where they might be drawing parallels. You know, I started playing the character of Wade Wilson back in 2009 with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a role that could have been my swan song given the film’s reception and Wilson’s portrayal. Yet, my desire to fully embody the character persisted, leading me to fight for another chance. And then, that leaked test footage in 2014 opened doors I hadn’t even dared to hope for. The Deadpool films have since become quite successful, with my entry into the MCU ranking as the second highest-grossing film of the year. So, perhaps the latest Marvel release is the test footage they need to keep me as the character.

Channing Tatum’s Gambit Journey Began Years Ago

The adventure of Channing Tatum as Gambit started when he was slated to portray Remy LeBeau in a separate project, being developed at 20th Century Fox. Despite this, the actor continued his association with the film, even joining the X-Men cast at San Diego Comic-Con, until everything unraveled following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. With Disney taking ownership of all Marvel properties, including those in development, the projects were terminated. Tatum didn’t get his chance to embody Gambit until ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, a fact that filmmakers managed to keep under wraps until the movie’s release. The actor’s performance was widely lauded by critics and fans alike, raising questions: Was this a singular appearance meant as amends for previous setbacks, or will Tatum be Gambit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

It’s clear that by the end of Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum’s Gambit is still alive. A deleted scene was released which verifies his well-being, and surprisingly, this moment is included in the final version. However, it’s subtly placed in the background of a scene on a screen displaying various images, making it easily overlooked unless one has a keen eye. Regarding Tatum and his future as Gambit, Reynolds expressed his support, praising his fellow actor, saying, “Channing embodies Gambit uniquely, but also he’s physically stunning, the way he moves and learns choreography.

In the storyline, Deadpool and Wolverine welcomed back various Marvel characters from 20th Century Fox like Blade played by Wesley Snipes, a role Reynolds thinks should persist, Elektra portrayed by Jennifer Garner (from Daredevil), Chris Evans’ Human Torch, and Aaron Stanford’s Pyro. The multiverse plot allowed these actors to reprise their roles, offering fans a delightful callback to their beloved performers and characters. However, whether this continues is uncertain, but it was a gratifying tribute for the fanbase.
