Deadpool & Wolverine's Very Different Post Credits Scenes, Explained

As a longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan with a soft spot for the edgier, R-rated side of things, I was both excited and apprehensive about watching “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The film promised a unique blend of profanity, gore, and MCU references, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it would live up to the hype.

In simple terms, “Deadpool & Wolverine” sets itself apart from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions with its heavy use of profanity and graphic violence, as well as one explicit sexual reference. These elements have raised concerns for MCU head Kevin Feige, who has previously maintained a PG-13 rating for the franchise. Nevertheless, the film does retain some MCU hallmarks, such as rewarding viewers who watch until the very end with bonus scenes.

As I watch the credits unfold after an intense gaming session, I’m treated to a fascinating look back at the Marvel movies produced under 20th Century Fox. It’s not your typical mid-credits scene, but more of a reflective journey through the history of these films.

In the case of a “Deadpool” film, the montage of clips is surprisingly heartfelt, looking back at the actors featured in superhero movies as early as the new millennium. However, fear not if you’re concerned that the “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” storyline concludes on a completely solemn note. Rest assured, there’s still a post-credits scene filled with Deadpool’s signature humor!

Chris Evans has a potty mouth in the Deadpool & Wolverine post-credits scene

Deadpool & Wolverine's Very Different Post Credits Scenes, Explained

The post-credits scene for “Deadpool & Wolverine” doesn’t introduce a surprise appearance or suggest “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Instead, it resolves a recurring joke from the movie itself.

Chris Evans’ Marvel rumor came true as he appeared in a minor role as Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four film. In an earlier scene, Cassandra Nova, portrayed by Emma Corrin, brutally killed Johnny by stripping off his skin, leaving only bones and organs behind. This act of violence was instigated by Deadpool’s provocations during their car ride to Nova’s base. Throughout the movie, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) blamed Deadpool for Johnny’s death, but in the post-credits scene, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) returned to the Time Variance Authority headquarters to reveal previously unreleased footage from their contentious car ride.

In the video, Johnny truly makes derogatory comments about Cassandra, filled with profanity and unlike the past when Chris Evans as Captain America would reprimand for even the slightest curse words. The clip presents clear evidence of Johnny’s harsh words towards Cassandra, and while Deadpool may believe the footage vindicates him, perhaps it would have been wiser for him to remain silent. Nevertheless, considering Deadpool’s character, known for his constant chatter and lack of filter, maybe keeping quiet was an unrealistic expectation.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s post-credits moments look toward the past rather than the future

Deadpool & Wolverine's Very Different Post Credits Scenes, Explained

MCU post-credits scenes can be unpredictable, ranging from humorous to setting up exciting possibilities for the franchise. At times, a film may attempt to combine both. Die-hard MCU fans might have anticipated hints about “Avengers 5” or “Secret Wars,” with the latter slated for release on May 7, 2027. However, all that materialized was a tribute to the Marvel universe from 20th Century Fox and Chris Evans using colorful language – fitting for a “Deadpool” movie, perhaps, as we shouldn’t have expected more.

Before the ending credits, a hint is given that the TVA might summon Deadpool and Wolverine at a later point, bringing them into the larger multiverse storyline. At present, Wade Wilson seems to be having a great time with his buddies, while Logan gets to build a connection with Laura (Dafne Keen). After all the challenges they faced, taking some time apart before teaming up once more for another major film could be beneficial.

Deadpool acknowledges that Marvel is going through a rough patch in its long-standing history. Consequently, the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine seems like an enjoyable triumph. This film serves as a reflection of two decades worth of “X-Men” movies and brings a more sophisticated vibe to the MCU’s movie lineup. It’s likely that the final scene will include a humorous quip about how Evans can curse with equal ease as Reynolds.
