Actor DeRon Horton, who plays a main character in Netflix’s “Dear White People,” is currently recuperating after sustaining a gunshot injury that fractured and splintered his arm.
Yesterday, the 32-year-old actor shared upsetting accounts and images of an unfortunate event on Instagram. Among these were photos from the hospital showing his gunshot wound, bloodied arm, a large cut, and multiple stitches on his forearm. He didn’t specify where the shooting occurred, but he did mention that it happened just before the Christmas holiday.
Horton expresses gratitude to God for his protection and survival through difficult situations, including the recent one where he was shot. He acknowledges those who reached out to him, particularly his family and friends, and shows his love for them. He thanks everyone for their support. Horton’s last professional acting role was on the Apple TV+ series “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey” with Samuel L. Jackson. He humorously mentions that getting shot a few days before Christmas wasn’t part of his plans, but it happened. Despite being injured, he feels blessed to be alive instead of in a casket or paralyzed. He expresses his gratitude to the Lord for this blessing.
Horton shared that he’s been discharged from the hospital and is currently undergoing recovery, having a metal plate and screws in his arm. He advises others to remain vigilant and expresses gratitude for all they have. Additionally, he states, “The devil can’t hinder anything when you walk with God.

Jackson is one of many who are sending well-wishes to Horton in the comment section, saying, “I’m glad you’re still here, Tuff Stuff. It’s fortunate that you’re under the protection of the Almighty. I hope your healing happens as swiftly and comfortably as possible.” Actor Keith Powers also commented, “Thank goodness you’re okay, buddy. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Before gaining fame as a lead actor in Justin Simien’s “Dear White People,” Horton had already accumulated numerous roles in Hollywood. He worked alongside Denzel Washington in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” portrayed Lou Carter on the show “American Vandal,” was a recurring character on the 2019 version of “American Horror Story,” and made appearances in “Bad Hair,” “Endless,” and “Bliss.
At one point, he had a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter for an interview about Dear White People. During this chat, he discussed his collaborations with Washington, whom he acknowledged as the key factor in shaping his career path. “I believe he’s significantly impacted my life, even saved it. I won’t hesitate to say that he, along with others I deeply admire, has left a lasting impression on me. Sitting here before him, I can still recall the thoughts racing through my high school mind: ‘I just want to be like him one day,’ and now look at me.
He mentioned: “I have a desire to gaze at the stars, to bombard him with 2,000 questions, yet I aspire to be as skilled as him immediately and try to replicate this scenario. It was quite challenging, but we managed to discuss a great deal. Our conversation ranged from Shakespeare, to God, love, making errors, and other similar topics. However, it was an incredibly humbling encounter for me.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out directly to Horton for additional comment on the shooting.
