Debra Messing doesn’t hide her progressive beliefs.
As a passionate fan of TV shows, I couldn’t help but seize the opportunity when “Will & Grace” made its comeback. I didn’t shy away from using this platform to voice my thoughts on certain political figures, notably President Donald Trump. Furthermore, during the 2020 election, I felt compelled to lend my support and recorded a video endorsing Joe Biden’s campaign.
It’s not surprising that the star is an activist. After all, she’s hardly exceptional in today’s socially conscious Hollywood.
However, instead of remaining silent, Messing took an unconventional step after Hamas launched a brutal attack on Israel on October 7. The celebrity began advocating for the freedom and safety of the Israeli hostages across various platforms, including social media.
Thank you, Debra Messing, for being a voice of reason and moral clarity in Hollywood.
A statement that Hamas should release the hostages should not be controversial.

She joined a microscopically small group of artists who use their clout to demand their release.
- Patricia Heaton
- Michael Rapaport
- John Ondrasik
- Amy Schumer
And, according to the director of a new documentary, Messing paid a price for it.
Wendy Sachs’ “October 8” reveals a startling increase in antisemitic incidents subsequent to the Hamas’ cruel actions, as discussed in an interview with Israel Hayom where she also touched upon the film, Hollywood’s response to the escalating anti-Israel sentiment, and additional topics.
It was surprising to find out that the Hollywood industry lacks backbone, and it seems that many individuals lack courage too. Despite numerous famous Jews excelling in roles such as producers, directors, writers, actors, and comedians, who have built their careers on sharing Jewish narratives, there’s an unexpected quietness among my acquaintances and friends now.
The movie showcases Rapaport lamenting the absence of star endorsements for the captives, and it was revealed that Messing’s activism wasn’t without consequence. Moreover, they weren’t the only ones facing this predicament.
I witnessed instances where individuals faced backlash and career damage due to their support for Israel. This included the case of actress Debra Messing, who was advised by her manager – who also worked on my film – that her actions were potentially harmful to her career.
Some celebrities, such as Susan Sarandon and Melissa Barrera from “Scream,” experienced a temporary backlash for strongly supporting the Palestinian cause. However, it seems they have been granted forgiveness and are now involved in new ventures.
Not Messing.
She’s had three minor roles since 2021 – “Bros,” “The Alto Knights” and “13: The Musical.”
The star has enough money due to two successful runs of “Will & Grace,” which might mean she’s choosing to work less frequently. Alternatively, her strong support for Israel could potentially be hurting her career opportunities.
Sachs wouldn’t be surprised. Nor should anyone following Hollywood in a post-October 7 world.
RELATED: ARE CRITICS AVOIDING ‘SCREAMS BEFORE SILENCE?’
Messing’s latest opinion piece in The Times of Israel could potentially worsen the issue, but she appears to be resigned to this outcome.
The actress doesn’t attack Hollywood directly, but her verbiage insinuates just that.
It wasn’t surprising to me that antisemitism existed among extremist groups, but what took me aback was witnessing its emergence in places I thought were secure and trustworthy. In environments that once felt safe. Even among individuals who claim to champion the downtrodden.
In retrospect, I find myself voicing my concerns about the growing wave of antisemitism among progressive circles. As a film critic, it’s crucial to address such issues head-on, especially when they undermine the very values we stand for.
It’s crucial that Jewish safety and progressive values never contradict each other. If they do, it might indicate a departure from our shared human values. The true measure of progressivism lies in its resilience, not only during easy times but also when things get tough; when it challenges us to accept multiple realities simultaneously.
