Demi Moore Gets Real About A Potential Ghost Remake, And If She'd Reprise Her Iconic Role

As a fan who grew up watching Demi Moore shine on the silver screen, I can’t help but reflect on her remarkable journey that took off with her roles in the Brat Pack movies and soared even higher with “Ghost.” When I heard about Channing Tatum’s potential remake of this classic film, my thoughts mirrored those of Ms. Moore herself: it’s a tough act to follow!

After achieving significant fame with movies like “Blame It on Rio“, “St. Elmo’s Fire“, and “About Last Night…“, Demi Moore’s career took a new leap forward with the film “Ghost“. Directed by Jerry Zucker, this movie featured Moore as a woman whose boyfriend was murdered, but his spirit lingered to save her from being killed by the same man. In early 2023, it was announced that Channing Tatum is working on a remake of “Ghost“, and Moore has expressed her thoughts about this potential project and whether she would reprise the role of Molly Jensen

Prior to the upcoming premiere of her horror film titled “The Substance” on the 2024 release calendar next week, Moore had an interview with Variety where she discussed the body horror film and various aspects of her career, such as “Ghost”. During the conversation about potential remakes, the actress expressed her views on it in a succinct manner:

In my gaming experience, I’ve found that some games are best enjoyed solo, but it really depends on the context. The success of ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ is truly about alchemy – a blend of combat, exploration, and narrative that feels magical. Consider Whoopi Goldberg, who masterfully anchored the humor in this captivating tale. Or Tony Goldwyn, the seemingly ordinary neighbor who turns out to be the most unexpected villain. And the charm and vitality of Patrick Swayze, who brings a certain sweetness and rugged masculinity to his characters. Chan Yik-Chan is incredibly intelligent and talented; who knows what he would bring to it if given the chance!

She’s absolutely right about that. One of the big reasons Ghost was such a critical hit, became the highest grossing movie of 1990 and ultimately netted two Academy Award wins and three other nominations was through its cast, with Demi Moore’s Molly and Patrick Swayze’s Sam Wheat being joined by Whoopi Goldberg’s Oda Mae Brown and Tony Goldwyn’s Carl Bruner, among others. It’d be a daunting prospect for the cast of a Ghost remake to achieve the kind of “alchemy” that the original lineup had.

It’s worth noting that the upcoming “Ghost” film starring Channing Tatum might not follow the typical remake/reboot formula. Instead, it could be a new story featuring fresh characters, but within the same universe as the 1990 original movie. This would potentially allow Demi Moore to reprise her role as Molly Jensen, although here’s what she expressed about the possibility:

I’d have to see what they come up with.

The most recent significant development regarding the remake of the movie “Ghost” occurred in May 2023, with Channing Tatum indicating that the project was making substantial progress and they were eager to proceed with something they could truly be proud of. However, beyond this timeframe, it’s uncertain where things stand with the new adaptation of “Ghost.” If Demi Moore chooses to participate, there’s speculation as to whether her role would be a cameo or if the script has been designed for Molly to take on a more significant supporting part

While we’re on tenterhooks about whether the latest Ghost film will materialize or not, don’t forget that you can watch the original movie by subscribing to Paramount+. Starting from September 20, catch Demi Moore’s performance in The Substance at your local theaters
