As a longtime admirer of Boots Riley’s groundbreaking work, I can confidently say that his upcoming film, “I Love Boosters,” is shaping up to be another masterpiece. With Riley’s knack for blending social commentary with outlandish concepts and an all-star cast, it promises to be a captivating ride.
Following the acclaim of his 2018 debut movie “Sorry to Bother You“, filmmaker Boots Riley has been consistently delivering captivating and distinctive projects. Now, the brainchild behind Amazon’s miniseries “I’m A Virgo” is gathering an impressive ensemble cast for his upcoming production titled “I Love Boosters“. The movie will be brought to life by Neon Productions and is rumored to focus on a band of opportunistic individuals, or thieves, known as “boosters.” With Riley’s distinctive visual flair and outlandish ideas at the helm, viewers can anticipate an intriguing cinematic experience.
Renowned for his innovative thinking, Riley’s upcoming movie promises to captivate with its high-profile ensemble cast. Most recently seen in Jordan Peele’s film “Nope”, Demi Moore of “The Substance” fame, Naomi Ackie from “Blink Twice”, and LaKeith Stanfield of “Sorry To Bother You” are rumored to be part of the cast for “I Love Boosters”. Production for this film is scheduled to start this fall, with no official release date announced as yet. Neon Pictures, known for producing “Longlegs”, shared a script and cast announcement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by posting a picture of the script.
The film I Love Boosters, with its anti-capitalist theme, mirrors the first movie of a communist activist, Sorry to Bother You. Featuring LaKeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson, this captivatingly twisted sci-fi comedy revolves around a telemarketer climbing the corporate ladder by catering to his affluent, white clientele, only to discover a bizarre and unsettling reality at the top. As Stanfield’s character advances, he confronts concerns from friends and coworkers, among them Steven Yeun as another telemarketer, about how much the job has affected him, while they persist in their struggle for improved labor conditions. Additionally, there are creatures that are half-horse, half-human. If the thought-provoking tale of Sorry to Bother You serves as a hint of what’s to come in Riley’s next production, then viewers should prepare for an entertaining experience.
Boots Riley: The Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Rapper & Communist Activist
Besides his work in cinema and television, Boots Riley is also a prominent figure in the music scene as the lead singer for The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club, a band featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine on guitar. Known for his activism and communist views, he frequently raps about political issues. In 2012, The Coup released an album titled “Sorry to Bother You.” Initially intended as a screenplay for his debut film with the same title, Riley was unable to secure production of the movie in 2012; instead, the band produced an album inspired by the script.
The album by the band The Coup contained a track titled “We’ve Got a Lot to Teach You, Cassius Green“, a clear nod to the character portrayed by Stanfield in the 2018 movie. Later, the film received its own soundtrack featuring artists like Janelle Monáe and Killer Mike. This was The Coup’s sixth and final studio album as the members decided to go their separate ways. Since then, the musician has been heavily involved in filmmaking and shows no signs of slowing down. His upcoming film, I Love Boosters, focusing on boosters and their struggle against a fashionista, seems consistent with his political and social message. With Riley’s innovative direction and writing, as well as the outstanding talents of Palmer, Ackie, Moore, and Stanfield, it appears that I Love Boosters is set to be another successful project for the director.
