This week, we’re seeing a flurry of changes in high-end fashion as creative leaders rearrange their roles, up-and-coming designers venture into fresh landscapes, and lasting collaborations are signed.
Recent shifts in high-end fashion see Demna moving from Balenciaga to Gucci, while Simone Bellotti transitions from Bally to Jil Sander. However, the most unexpected change is Donatella Versace stepping down from her designer position at Versace, a role she held for nearly three decades. Meanwhile, speculations swirl as Jonathan Anderson is absent from Loewe’s runways. Intriguing newcomers to the luxury sphere include Bode opening its first international store in Paris and Wales Bonner revealing its debut women’s collection for FW25. Lastly, Liverpool FC has ended its contract with Nike and entered into a multi-year agreement with adidas, starting this year, in the sports world.
This article gathers the most noteworthy fashion news from the past week, ensuring you remain informed about the latest fads and styles in the world of fashion.
Demna OUT at Balenciaga, IN at Gucci
After nearly a decade at Balenciaga, Demna has decided to leave his position as Creative Director for a fresh opportunity at Gucci. In response, Francesca Bellettini, Kering’s Deputy CEO, stated, “Demna’s deep comprehension of modern culture and his knack for creating groundbreaking projects make him one of the most impactful and successful creators of this generation.” She went on to say, “His appointment as Artistic Director will serve as a catalyst to rejuvenate Gucci’s creative spirit. I am excited about the collaboration between Demna and Stefano as they guide Gucci towards a new era of prosperity.
Recently, some may recall that Demna Gvasalia started working at the renowned Florentine brand last year, merging Balenciaga and Gucci symbolism in the 2021 Hacker Project. However, it appears that Kering shareholders might not be as convinced about Demna’s abilities, contrasting with Kering’s executive team. A divisive figure within the fashion industry, Demna Gvasalia is recognized for his witty eyewear and unique blend of everyday style and avant-garde aesthetics. On Friday, it was disclosed that Kering stocks dropped by 12% after the announcement, with analysts labeling Demna as a “risky choice” for the iconic Gucci brand, which is famous for its enduring elegance.
Donatella Versace Steps Down as Versace Designer After Almost 30 Years
For almost three decades, I’ve been steering the ship of my brother’s fashion empire, and now it’s time for a new voyage. The esteemed former Miu Miu designer, Dario Vitale, is taking the helm as I embark on a new role as the chief brand ambassador. Exciting times ahead!
Since the death of her brother Gianni, who established the brand in 1997, Donatella has been at the helm as the primary designer for Versace. In a statement, she expressed her profound gratitude for being able to uphold her brother’s legacy, acknowledging his immense talent while hoping that some of his creativity and determination reside within her. Excited about the opportunity, she looks forward to viewing Versace through fresh perspectives.
The news is that Prada Group appears to be nearing finalization of a deal to purchase Versace from Capri Holdings Ltd. Last week, the two parties reached an agreement for nearly €1.5 billion EUR ($1.6 billion USD), and they may finalize the deal by the end of this month. Since Capri Holdings bought Versace in 2018, the brand has faced instability, with its most recent financial report showing a 28.2% drop in quarterly revenue.
Simone Bellotti Named Creative Director of Jil Sander
In January, the team at Jil Sander’s creative helm, Luke and Lucie Meier, chose to step down, paving the way for Simone Bellotti’s recent appointment as the brand’s new creative head. Interestingly, Bellotti previously held a similar position at Bally for just two years, an exit that was echoed by his predecessor, Rhuigi Villaseñor of Rhude.
In a formal announcement, Renzo Rosso, head of the OTB Group, stated that Simone brings extensive experience and a unique skillset to his new role. Throughout our collaboration, we’ve developed a mutual understanding of the strategic direction and mission for Jil Sander, appreciating its iconic and distinctive qualities rooted in innovation and elegance. Previously, Bellotti held a 16-year stint at Gucci and has held senior design positions at Bottega Veneta and Gianfranco Ferré, before joining Bally.
In the appointment, Bellotti expressed his immense gratitude for joining Jil Sander, a renowned brand known for creating a distinctive aesthetic and making a lasting impact on the design world with its unique approach and strong identity. He is thankful to Renzo for the confidence placed in him, and he is eager to contribute to the realization of Jil Sander’s full potential.
Was Loewe FW25 A Lovely Goodbye?
As a devoted admirer, I’ve been keeping an eye on the whispers about Jonathan Anderson potentially leaving Loewe, and these rumors have gained more momentum following the recent Paris Fashion Week. Instead of gracing the runway calendar, Loewe chose to hold a co-ed salon presentation within Karl Lagerfeld’s historic abode on Rue de l’Université, which adds fuel to the speculation.
In the recent past, I myself shared an Instagram reel, showcasing some of my most memorable designs throughout my ten-year journey. This, coupled with the absence of my label JW Anderson at London Fashion Week, has sparked intriguing speculation among fans. However, it’s important to note that as of now, there’s no official confirmation from Loewe regarding my departure.
Bode Opens a Grand Paris Flagship
American fashion brand Bode, led by designer Emily Bode, has established a presence in Paris through a new store, which was designed by Aaron Aujla of Green River Project, Bode’s partner. This physical location marks the brand’s initial expansion outside of the U.S., offering approximately 2500 square feet and positioned on rue de Valois close to Rick Owens’ Paris flagship store.
Bode, a winner of both the LVMH Prize and twice named CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year, has been steadily growing its impact with a focus on artisanal Americana. As stated by Bode about the brand’s global retail expansion, “We have established a solid foundation through our international partners, which tells us there’s demand. I strongly support the power of brick-and-mortar stores and their influence on business. Our stores truly embody the essence of the brand – the atmosphere, the aromas, the decoration, the merchandising, and how our staff presents it.
Wales Bonner Drops First Standalone Womenswear Collection for FW25
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Grace Wales Bonner has debuted her brand’s inaugural women’s-centric collection, building upon the romantic tailoring found in her FW25 men’s line. The spotlight pieces include tuxedo jackets worn sans shirt, pleated trousers paired with a leather-trimmed cardigan, and a shift dress inspired by duffel jackets crafted from leather. Wales Bonner’s signature Mary Jane shoes and tracksuits make a return, with the latter available in brown and orange tones, harmonizing beautifully with a macrame dress knitted in those same vibrant hues.
Distinctive designs feature a cavalry coat adorned with satin contrast and brass buttons, collaboratively created with Savile Row’s Anderson & Sheppard. Additionally, a graphic t-shirt showcases photography by Moneta Sleet Jr., generously provided by The Black Image Corporation. Despite its roots in conventional women’s fashion shapes, the collection draws on Wales Bonner’s menswear vocabulary, seamlessly merging the two for a graceful blend.
