One of the most questionable oversights was Denis Villeneuve’s absence from the Best Director category for the exceptional film “Dune: Part Two,” which is among the finest movies of 2024. Remarkably, the movie only garnered two nominations – Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer. Although the cast members were individually nominated, each recognition was for a different project. Timothée Chalamet received a nod for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” while Zendaya was recognized for her outstanding performance in “Challengers.
In March 2024, “Dune: Part Two” emerged victoriously at the box office, earning approximately $715 million compared to its production budget of $190 million. Impressively, according to Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a Tomatometer score of 92% and an even higher Popcornmeter rating of 95%. Although financial success and critical acclaim don’t guarantee an award-winning movie, “Dune: Part Two” is an exception. The film’s triumph can be attributed to the exceptional directing skills of Denis Villeneuve, who deserved recognition with a Golden Globe nomination. Despite facing multiple delays in its release, which often spells trouble for a movie, Villeneuve’s involvement was crucial in shaping “Dune: Part Two” into the masterpiece it became.

Originally scheduled for a October 2023 cinema debut, Dune: Part Two got delayed to November 2023 due to competing films from other studios. But it was postponed again later in the year because of a writers’ and actors’ strike. After the resolution of these strikes, the film made its way to the big screen in March 2024. When it finally premiered, Dune: Part Two left both audiences and critics impressed.
It’s quite possible that the fact that Dune: Part Two was delayed by four months has impacted its chances of receiving nominations for awards, as films released later in the year often get more attention and are more likely to be nominated due to being fresh in people’s minds when the nominations are announced. If Dune: Part Two had been released on schedule last year, it might have been in contention for several nominations during the previous award season, such as one for Villeneuve’s direction. Unfortunately, this delay seems to be the reason behind its omission from the Golden Globe nominations.

In a different phrase, adapting Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune proved to be no walk in the park. Earlier attempts as films and shows didn’t quite reach the mark set by Villeneuve’s adaptations. If not for his creative vision and guidance, Dune: Part Two might have been just another mediocre effort instead of the significant success it turned out to be, both financially and critically. Not only did audiences appreciate the film, but other directors were left in awe by Villeneuve’s exceptional work on the project.
Without a doubt, some top-tier Hollywood directors, such as James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, have praised the movie, labeling it as “true cinema” and one of the best science fiction films to be shown in cinemas. Given this acclaim, it’s clear that Denis Villeneuve deserved a Best Director nomination for Dune: Part Two at the Golden Globes. He previously received recognition for the initial Dune, which, while considered the weaker of his Dune works, is still remarkable.
