Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ Is the Best Movie of 2024, IMDb Declares

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-going experience under my belt, I must say that 2024 has been nothing short of spectacular at the box office. From Nicolas Cage’s bold portrayal of his own mother in “Longlegs” to Denis Villeneuve’s masterful adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune: Part Two,” this year has served up a smorgasbord of cinematic delights that have left me both awestruck and emotionally fulfilled.

While Paul Mescal and Aandrew Scott tugged at our heartstrings in “All of Us Strangers” and Yorgos Lanthimos got his quirky fix with “Poor Things” and “Kinds of Kindness,” it is Denis Villeneuve’s magnum opus that has stolen the show. With an IMDb rating of 8.5/10, “Dune: Part Two” not only takes the crown for best movie of 2024 but also ranks as the 54th greatest film of all time according to the site’s score-based rankings. That’s some pretty impressive company to be in, folks!

As a self-proclaimed sci-fi aficionado, I must say that Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies are nothing short of breathtaking. The fact that this novel, long considered unadaptable, has been transformed into such a captivating and philosophical masterpiece is truly mind-boggling. And to think that it all started with Timothee Chalamet’s portrayal of the enigmatic Paul Atreides!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “What about those sandworms? They were just as iconic as the story itself!” Well, let me tell you, those CGI monstrosities were nothing short of awe-inspiring. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see an 800-foot-long worm devour an enemy army in one bite? Talk about a lunch break!

All in all, “Dune: Part Two” is a must-see for any film lover, and I eagerly await the release of “Dune: Messiah.” Who knows what mind-bending twists and turns Villeneuve has in store for us next? One thing’s for sure – it will be one heck of a ride!

And as for that joke I promised… Here goes nothing: Why don’t sandworms ever go to school? Because they find the curriculum too hard to swallow! (Cue groans and eyerolls from the audience.)

2024 was quite a rollercoaster ride at the cinema for me. I found myself astonished by Nicolas Cage portraying his own mother in “Longlegs”. Paul Mescal and Aandrew Scott tugged at our heartstrings (no shock there) in “All of Us Strangers”. Yorgos Lanthimos took us on a strange journey with both “Poor Things” and “Kinds of Kindness”. A24 showed their knack for action with “Civil War”, and Wim Wenders made me contemplate quitting my job to become a toilet cleaner with “Perfect Days”. As the year comes to an end, it’s no surprise that [my favorite movie of the year] has been revealed, and it’s none other than “Dune: Part Two“.

The second installment of Dune has garnered an impressive 8.5/10 rating on IMDb, making it a standout film for 2024. Despite the rise in popularity of Rotten Tomatoes, achieving such a high score on IMDb is no small feat. Currently ranked as the 54th greatest movie of all time by the site’s ratings, Dune Part Two surpasses Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West and trails just behind Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock – quite an esteemed group to be associated with. The Wild Robot, hailed as 2024’s best animated movie by many, comes in second place, while Adrien Brody’s latest film, The Brutalist, takes third.

Dune Part Two” is the follow-up film by Denis Villeneuve to the 2021 release, “Dune”. This sequel is adapted from Frank Herbert’s famous novel of the same name. In this continuation, we find Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) surviving in the desert world of Arrakis after his house faced destruction. Joined by Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Paul proves his mettle against one of the Fremen’s elite fighters, earning him acceptance among them. Determined to fulfill the prophecy of the Lisan al-Gaib, Lady Jessica aims to make Paul a messiah for the Fremen people. The official summary goes:

In a quest for vengeance against those who betrayed his kin, Paul Atreides forms an alliance with Chani and the Fremen. Caught between the desire to be with his beloved and saving the cosmos from impending doom, he is tasked with averting a catastrophic future that only he can perceive.

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ Movies Are Deserving of Their High Praise

It’s truly remarkable that Denis Villeneuve has managed to create two highly acclaimed and financially successful science fiction blockbusters. In fact, it’s a wonder that any film gets made at all in this industry, given the challenges involved. However, what sets him apart is the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel “Dune,” which was once thought impossible due to its complex political themes, intricate writing style, and focus on characters reflecting on events rather than directly experiencing them.

It’s worth noting that Villeneuve’s film versions aren’t entirely faithful adaptations of the books. Significant portions of the story are left out, and key characters and factions are absent. However, the French-Canadian director effectively captures the philosophical and moral essence of the books as Paul grapples with the numerous prophecies predicting his messianic role among the Fremen. In the upcoming Dune: Messiah, if Villeneuve stays true to the novel, we can expect things to become quite unusual for Paul as he continues his trilogy.
