In the debut episode of the third season of “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test,” a program where famous personalities undergo challenging, military-style training drills, Denise Richards, an actress known for her role in “Wild Things,” courageously shared a harrowing incident from her youth. Richards disclosed that when she was 15 years old, she was the victim of a sexual assault by an unknown individual.
The story commences as per Decider, when Richard was summoned by the trainers of the demanding program, Billy Billingham, a retired SAS Sergeant Major, and Jovon “Q” Quarles, a seasoned Navy SEAL veteran. They inquired about Richard’s decision to join the challenging show. Richard explained that she frequently encounters situations that instill fear within her, causing her to become immobile.
Richard expressed that he gets overwhelmed in scary circumstances, and he’s eager to learn strategies to remain composed and take action. He enrolled in the course because he’s found himself unable to respond effectively in such situations, not even being able to speak up for himself.
Initially, Richard brought to mind an event from November 2022 where she and her spouse, Aaron Phypers, encountered an angry motorist who fired shots at them while they were in their vehicle.
My husband and I had an incident while we were driving together. He wanted to take me somewhere, but he didn’t feel comfortable letting me go alone. Unfortunately, we were both physically shot at in his truck. The fear made me freeze on the spot, and I ended up wetting myself.
Details of Richards’s Assault Are Horrifying and All Too Familiar
As a film enthusiast, let me share an experience that left me frozen in fear – the first time I encountered a harrowing situation as a teenager: an assault I had never spoken of before, except to my spouse. “I was 15, and I sensed a man trailing behind me… Suddenly, he appeared from behind, slapped his hand over my mouth, touched me inappropriately, and began pulling me along. But I couldn’t move or shout for help.
Following the retelling of the distressing incident, Richard’s composure crumbled, giving way to tears. He then expressed, “It’s truly terrifying to encounter such a predicament at that age and feel so defenseless… I have three daughters whom I wish will never endure the same ordeal. Additionally, if heaven forbid something were to happen, I pray they possess the strength to overcome.
As a movie critic, let me express that I was taken aback by the candidness displayed by the actress towards Billingham and Quarles during our interview. Reflecting on it now, I realize there are aspects of my life I haven’t delved into before, and I must admit, it was quite daunting. I ponder if I would have the courage to confront my past head-on.
Unfortunately, tales similar to Richards’s are alarmingly frequent. As reported by RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), approximately one out of every six American women has experienced an attempt or completion of rape during her lifetime, with a majority of child victims falling between the ages of 12 and 17.
Should you or anyone close to you have been a victim of sexual assault, you may reach out to the RAINN national hotline anytime, day or night, without charge. The number is 1-800-656-HOPE.
