Dennis Quaid Says Reagan Is His Favorite Movie Role Despite Bad Reviews

As a long-time fan of Dennis Quaid‘s illustrious career, I must say that his latest role as President Ronald Reagan in the upcoming biopic, “Reagan,” has truly left an indelible mark on me. While “The Right Stuff” held the top spot in my heart for four decades, playing his hero, Gordon Cooper, and even getting a pilot’s license from that movie were experiences I will never forget. However, after 40 years, there’s a new movie at the pinnacle of his career, and that’s “Reagan.”

For almost five decades, Dennis Quaid has had a memorable film career, and there’s one particular experience he cherishes above all others. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, the soon-to-be star of the biopic Reagan revealed that his role as astronaut Gordon Cooper in the 1983 film The Right Stuff has always held the top spot in his heart. But now, something has changed…

In his latest biopic, actor Quaid assumes the role of President Ronald Reagan, primarily set in the ’80s. He mentioned that portraying Reagan led him to reflect on his past work, particularly in the film “The Right Stuff” from 1983. This movie had a significant impact on how he evaluates his films. Quaid explained, “The making of [films] holds great importance for me as I recall what I was doing on each day during production. For much of my career, ‘The Right Stuff’ has been a benchmark because astronauts fascinated me as a child.” He further stated:

“Originally, I portrayed my idol, Gordon Cooper, and earned a pilot’s license from that film. Chuck Yeager was constantly present during production, and we filmed at Edwards Air Force Base. However, after four decades, there’s a new movie leading the pack, and that’s Reagan. This is significant to me on a personal level. Since I have a unique viewpoint compared to most moviegoers, this film deserves the top spot now.”

Reagan Features an All-Star Cast

According to the trailer, Quaid skillfully transforms into the 40th President of the United States, a figure renowned for sparking economic growth and pushing back against the Soviet Union. The movie follows Reagan’s life journey, from his early years up until his tenure in the Oval Office. There will be numerous scenes filmed exclusively at the well-known Reagan Ranch, which is located just north of Los Angeles, California.

Under the direction of Sean McNamara (previously known as “Shadrach”) and penned by Howard Klausner (“The Secret Handshake”), this film boasts Penelope Ann Miller in the role of Nancy Reagan. Quaid praised her performance, remarking it as “something special.” Alongside Miller, the cast includes Mena Suvari portraying Reagan’s ex-wife Jane Wyman, Jon Voight as Viktor Petrovich, Kevin Dillon from “Entourage” as a prominent movie mogul Jack Warner, and C. Thomas Howell, famously known for his role as Ponyboy Curtis in “The Outsiders.”

Beyond “The Right Stuff,” Quaid’s impressive acting repertoire also features roles in films like “Breaking Away” from 1979, “Great Balls of Fire” and “Far From Heaven,” both released in 1989 and 2002 respectively, “The Rookie” and “The Day After Tomorrow” in 2002 and 2004. He also delivered a remarkable performance in the recent miniseries “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” Just as Quaid was captivated by “Reagan,” audiences are sure to be charmed by it when it hits theaters on August 30.
