As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating worlds of Ridley Scott’s masterpieces, I can confidently say that Sir Ridley Scott is not just overdue for an Academy Award – he’s long past due! His work transcends time and genre, leaving an indelible mark on cinema history.
There’s scarcely any argument that Sir Ridley Scott is among the most impactful directors in modern cinema. He’s directed many iconic films, such as Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, and Gladiator. Given his remarkable body of work, it’s still somewhat surprising that Scott has yet to receive an Academy Award. (Typing those words doesn’t quite seem fitting.) Remarkably, the esteemed filmmaker hasn’t required defense, but that didn’t deter Denzel Washington from expressing a brief reaction to Scott never earning an Oscar.
The well-known actor collaborated with Ridley Scott in the 2007 movie “American Gangster” and, more recently, on the long-awaited sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II.” During promotional activities for the 2024 release, Denzel Washington sat down for an interview with THR as part of a comprehensive article about the film’s production. Known for his straightforwardness – while always maintaining respect – it’s fitting that he would express candid and succinct opinions on his director not receiving recognition from the Academy.
Ridley is overdue.
I wholeheartedly concur with the actor from “Man on Fire” in this matter. To date, the director of “Legend,” who has been nominated for four Oscars, deserves recognition. Three of these nominations were for Best Director, earned through his exceptional work on “Thelma & Louise,” “Black Hawk Down,” and “Gladiator.” The fourth nomination was a Best Picture nod for his 2016 science-fiction film, “The Martian.” This talented British director truly deserved any one of those awards, and it’s unfortunate that he hasn’t yet taken home an Oscar. The actor from “Fences” added further thoughts on the subject of his collaborator’s lack of a win:
How can he not have won an Oscar? That doesn’t even make sense. I don’t believe it, actually.

Denzel Washington Gets Real About Why He Hasn’t Watched Malcolm X Or Any Of His Movies In Their Entirety
Despite Ridley Scott’s top films not receiving Academy Awards, at 86 years old, it appears he doesn’t seek validation through awards. Instead, he seems to find joy in the artistry itself rather than the accolades. Yet, Scott has earned various awards and honors, including two Primetime Emmys, a Golden Globe, and several Saturn Awards. From what I gather about his demeanor, it’s unlikely that not winning an Academy Award bothers him much.
Denzel Washington has been awarded two Oscars for Best Actor, and it’s possible he could earn another one. The film “Gladiator II” has received much acclaim, with critics particularly praising Washington’s portrayal of Macrinus, the cunning slave-turned-gladiator trainer. Given the buzz about Washington’s performance, there’s a good chance he might even get nominated.
I’m equally curious if Ridley Scott will secure an Academy Award nomination this time or not. If he doesn’t, it would be fitting for him to receive a honorary award instead, as his work certainly warrants such recognition.
