Denzel Washington’s Black Panther 3 Role Revealed

In November, esteemed actor Denzel Washington, a recipient of the prestigious Oscar, was talking about future roles and potential retirement from acting, when he incidentally revealed a significant tidbit – director Ryan Coogler is “penning a role for me in the next Black Panther movie.” This news has sparked much discussion surrounding the upcoming third Black Panther film, with whispers that the character of T’Challa, portrayed by Chadwick Boseman, might be recast.

In a conversation with ScreenRant, Marvel’s Vice President of Production & Development and Executive Producer, Nate Moore, addressed the topic of Washington’s participation. He also emphasized that discussions about Black Panther 3 are still very preliminary.

As a movie critic, I can confidently say that if this project materializes, it’s likely we’ll see someone from our established roster taking on the role. However, at this stage, the identity remains unclear. We’ve had preliminary discussions with Ryan, who is currently wrapping up his film Sinners for release this year – a highly anticipated production. With Denzel Washington expressing interest in joining us, rest assured we’ll do everything possible to accommodate him and bring that collaboration to life.

It appears that Washington reached out to Coogler and apologized for discussing details about the movie and possibly leaking potential spoilers. Remember, the third installment is still in its infancy of development. With Coogler’s “Sinners” set to premiere on April 18, it’s likely he will begin working on the script for “Black Panther 3” sometime this summer or possibly even earlier if he hasn’t already started.

Given the pace of preparations for a movie of this scale, including casting and pre-production, it might take another year or more before filming begins. It’s just speculation, but there’s a possibility that Black Panther 3 might not release until 2028, making it 10 years since the original was first shown.

Will Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa be Recast?

Chadwick Boseman portrayed the character T’Challa, also known as the Black Panther, multiple times from 2016 to 2019. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2020 after a long struggle with colon cancer. Marvel Studios appeared unwilling to replace him, and in the 2022 sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” T’Challa’s sister Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) stepped into the role as Black Panther instead.

It was reported that Marvel Studios might be considering a change in the actor portraying T’Challa, even though the character has supposedly passed away in the sequel. This news sparked a variety of opinions among fans, some of whom were open to the idea due to the successful replacement of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross with Harrison Ford following William Hurt’s demise.

Moore also addressed the T’Challa recasting rumor just days ago, explaining:

In reality, the stories you’re hearing aren’t true at all. You never know what might happen – we haven’t had many opportunities for creative discussions with Ryan Coogler just yet.”

Here, I’ve aimed to maintain the original meaning while using simpler, more conversational language and avoiding jargon.

As we eagerly anticipate the release of Black Panther 3, there’s a wealth of Marvel Cinematic Universe films scheduled for release over the coming years, starting with Captain America: Brave New World, set to premiere next week. In addition, Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, slated for 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
