Derek A.E. Fuhrmann, Co-Writer of Phillip Phillips’ “Gone, Gone, Gone,” Dies at 44

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Derek A.E. Fuhrmann, a talented songwriter who received an ASCAP Pop Award and co-wrote “Gone, Gone, Gone” with Phillip Phillips. He was only 44 years old.

Fuhrmann passed away on June 27 in Nashville after a long fight against cancer, as confirmed by his publicist, Harlan Boll.

Fuhrmann kicked off his career in music at the University of Delaware, where his passion for music took root. During his college years, he created a band called Omnisoul, which later became known as The Crash Motive. In 2005, this band secured a deal with Sony BMG and enjoyed a successful musical journey together.

They traveled across the country, and some of their tunes were incorporated into television shows and movie productions. Particularly memorable was their song “Waiting (Save Your Life)”, which was featured in the 2005 Fantastic Four soundtrack as well as on the show Joan of Arcadia.

Afterward, Fuhrmann decided to venture into a solo path as a vocalist, lyricist, and music producer. In collaboration with Philip Phillips, he created the double-platinum hit “Gone, Gone, Gone” in 2012, which was also featured on the soundtrack of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The song climbed up to the 24th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The track also appeared in various productions, such as an episode of “Degrassi: The Next Generation” from 2013, a show called “Danville 2nd Ward Young Men,” and the film “Grudge Match,” which featured Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone.

In the 31st awards ceremony, Fuhrmann was honored with the ASCAP Pop Award for his contributions to “Gone, Gone, Gone.” Later, he shared his skills by collaborating with bands such as O.A.R., Goo Goo Dolls, Five for Fighting, and Kygo.

A celebration in honor of Fuhrmann will be held this fall.

Among those who carry on are his spouse, Mackenzie; his sons, Finn and Boone; his parents, Fred and Deborah; his sisters, Donna, Karin, Gail and Nancy; and his brothers, Andrew and Rob.
